Orihime was set as the love interest from the start of the manga menwhile Rukia was alwasy shown as more of experiance friend character who's purpose was to introduce Ichigo to the Soul reaper world and whip him in to shape when he broke down from the stress of having to deal with something a 15 year old isn't cut out for.Also, it was made abundantly clear her and Renji were gonna be set up by the time him and Ichigo fought during the SS arc, IchRuki's were denying reality.
Man, there were so many interesting characters and ideas in this manga that went nowhere because Kubo autistically focused on Ichigo and the captains so much.

>>728752256The fact the Hueco Mundo arc was a rehash of the SS arc was proof that Kubo really didn't know what he wanted to do with the manga. From what he's given away during interviews originally Ichigo and Rukai's time in the human world was supposed to last much longer with it being increasingly obvious that Ichigo was more than a substitute, the HS friend character were also supposed to play a much part in the story.Kubo's editors thought the human world setting was boring and demanded he move to SS even though a lot of the setup wasn't finished, Kubo had to scrap most of his timeline. Same thing happened post SS arc, Kubo wanted Ichigo to spend more time with the SS crew but editors wanted a new setting again.

Post SS he just felt like he was at the beck and call to the captains. Part of why I really enjoyed Fullbring and wish it hadn't been cut short was because it gave him some much needed agency and development.

I have gone back and reread the initial chapters, I never saw anything that implied there was anything going on between them. She treated Ichigo as a brat she had to deal with and eventually a trusted friend but their relationship was always platonic even when it was playful. I don't understand why people wanted them to be a couple, they worked very well as friends. One of my biggest gripes was that they ended up separated, I always looked at their relationship kinda like how the vice captains were always comedic foils to one anther. They were meant to play off eachother and when they were separated both their personalities became more bland, especially Ichigo.>the ultra bombshell and the kid who is completely immune to her charms>The hyper competent ball buster girl and her fat nepo baby VC>the dirty old man and his secretary who tries to get him to do his job while ignoring his advancesRukia was the experienced soul reaper who looked like a teenage girl who was stuck with a incredible powerful but young and naive boy she has to manage while he treats her like a brat. They alternated from fighting like siblings to being eachothers emotional support, but the never acted like they had feelings for one another. Some of the best moments in the series were when they were eachothers comedic setup.
