I'm super excited. Went straight to the top of my wishlist.
Don't mind me. I'm just gonna scootch on into this thread and double dip posts in case my Baba thread dies:

Anyone else played Nimi's Garden?
Holy shit what a delightful puzzle. I'm so pleased with myself. I feel like a fucking genius. Grinning from ear to ear here.

The puzzles are probably going to be great. The downside is that the graphical style is pretty ugly (as it was in Braid in my opinion). Overall I think going to like it a lot

I've been doing research into this game after the trailer released (reading articles and posts by people involved) because it was terrible and told me jack shit, and it led me to playing the 4 games that were a direct inspiration for the 4 worlds in Order of the Sinking Star, and they are actually amazing. I'm now 100% certain that this will be another Jon Blow masterpiece. And now for the games in question:
>North: Heroes of Sokoban
https://sites.math.washington.edu/~ostroff/puzzles/Heroes_of_Sokoban.html
https://sites.math.washington.edu/~ostroff/puzzles/Heroes_of_Sokoban_II_Monsters.html
https://sites.math.washington.edu/~ostroff/puzzles/Heroes_of_Sokoban_III_The_Bard_and_The_Druid.html
>East: Mirror Isles
https://alan.draknek.org/games/puzzlescript/mirrors.php
>West: Promesst
https://silverspaceship.com/promesst/
https://silverspaceship.com/promesst2/
>South: Skipping Stones To Lonely Homes
https://alan.draknek.org/games/puzzlescript/skipping-stones.php
I think it's funny that east and south worlds have the same names and the original games because they aren't copyrighted.

honestly not really. the horrific marketing based around voice actors blabbering nonsense is a red flag imo. I was excited about this game in the past whenever it was shown because I love The Witness and I think Jon's talks about the decline of "tech" are brilliant. I have no issues ignoring some of his immature kneejerk takes on other games. but the fact that his idea of marketing his game is
>spend huge money on being included in the one big games show per year, where every other game is some actionslop targeting casuals and your actual audience probably isn't watching
>your trailer is boring and features globohomo, diverse sounding voice actors rattling off random ass lines that don't add up to set any stage or establish any mood
>give them game a long, forgettable name
seriously, I've already forgotten it!

I just can't ignore how awful absolutely every one of these decisions is. even if the game is good it is now a guaranteed flop thanks to the anti-marketing title and trailer. again, think about how they spent lots of money to drop their trailer at the EXACT worst time possible, when every other, more dopamine inducing game trailer is being released. talk about being stuck in the past and misunderstanding your audience.

>>728762441

>>
>>728767043
I am a misogynist who thinks genders aren't equal. and frankly if you're anything else as a man you're mentally ill. as a woman I get that the allure of the cope is too strong to resist. who wouldn't want to believe one is simultaneously a historical victim recovering from oppression and just as good as the oppressor? that's powerful stuff, it's like a bribe. accept the falsehood and you will benefit. of course women lack the moral compass to resist it and most men would as well.

but to be on the male side and accept the same brainwashing? any man over the age of 25 who still believes the egalitarian message is a lost cause. if you can't think for yourself by 25 you're never going to.

pretty sure the trailer mentioned heroes of sokoban, but yeah it's wierd that this is the first I've heard of the other stuff too
>>
>>728769514
It mentioned "a land of heroes" (Sokoban is copyrighted), which is extremely abstract and generic. Mirror Isles and Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes are referred to by the actual name, but I'm willing to bet good money that less that 2% of people who have seen the trailer know about the original games.

I had a look at the leaked Jai language release and it sucks t.b.h. I wasn't surprised though; any illusion I had of Blow's competence in programming language design was shattered a while back when someone asked him on stream if Jai's memcpy() works for overlapping memory and Blow said that he doesn't remember and that it doesn't matter. Compare this to Rust where you have copy() and copy_nonoverlapping() so there's no confusion.

I'm curious how things will turn out for Blow because it looks like both the game and the language might end up being total flops.

Unity uses C#. Again, this is why I don' trust retards that think you need to build everything from scratch, from making everything in a new untested programming language to making an engine that does shit you can already do in Unity while not really doing anything meaningful to justify its own existence.

They always ALWAYS make subpar products at best that don't justify the time and effort put into remaking the wheel. They out themselves as pseudo-intellectual retards doing the same shit everyone else does, but while taking longer due to hubris.

I fucking hate the witness I wanted to like it and then realized every set of puzzles was gonna be some "you gotta look at a glare or reflection at a specific angle to get spoonfed the solution and this is the only way to solve it"
sorry but that's not puzzling that's pixelhunting, it's antithesis to the concept of "a puzzle"
a puzzle lays practical simplicities in front of you and forces you to reconceptualize their configuration, the witness has you observe the environment for ever abstracting keys. That's what's called a fucking scavenger hunt. There's no out of the box thinking or working with what you have it's just moving the camera around until you stumble upon the answers.

Anyway this new game looks great, 4 simple yet deceptively complex puzzles and we will see their concepts blended and increase in complexity as it continues. Seems like he saw a real puzzle game like Baba and completely shit his pants, decided to stop being a fraud.

I don't think there will be another Thekla game frankly. Blow has coasted off of the fame he had from Braid being the first indie game on the Xbox 360 arcade and that served him well for a decade afterwards. Now, in a market full of puzzle games that are better than Braid or anything else he's ever released, he's going to find out quickly no one cares any more and he should change careers because he's not a good programmer and not a good game developer in any capacity.

Souja Boy was fundamentally right: there's nothing unique or special or worthwhile in his games and the mythic aura of his pedigree has long since vanished to make this all the more apparent.

Idk, I really liked The Witness, and the Braid remaster was really good (except for the platform collision in 2 levels, I had to switch to original graphics to finish those), he just failed to advertise it properly, as he did this game. This might be what actually bites him in the ass in the end, not the quality of what he makes.

Jon Blow is a fucking meme, you turdnugget. All his games are derivative and have been done better by other people.
>>
>>728784650
>Intermeshing 4 games' mechanics together is no small feat
DROD games have enough "mechanics" (i.e. different building blocks) to power like 20 modern puzzlers.
4 is not an impressive number at all, even Portal 2 have more elements to it. Pure Sokoban is trash, 4 "mechanics" is like mere 3 more possibilities above it.
Milking one mechanic dry, like in Steven Sausage Slop, doesn't make for a very compelling game. This meme minimalism in game design is, in fact, mere lack of imagination, of creativity.
>>
>>728760883

I'm guessing that you mean The Looker. While it is a good game and a great parody, and it also proves that Blow didn't actually need to make a whole ass engine for it, The Witness is still a lot better simply due to being bigger and more refined.
>>
>>728790207

Chronobot (Flash game)
Induction
Achron (well, it's not a puzzle, but have to be mentioned)

It looks like the overworld (at least how it was in the trailer) loops around. I counted and this map is 10 puzzles wide and 12 puzzles tall, total of 120, less than 10% of the advertised 1400 puzzles.
>>
>>728801326
I also look at a single screenshot of a game and determine that if it's not on-screen, it's not in the game.
>>
>>728801906
What do you mean?
>>
>>728801972
You can't imagine there being more outside of this single screenshot? You can even see that the edge ones are cut off and it extends past the borders of the image.
>>
>>728802136
Oh, I wasn't doomposting. I was just analyzing the map we saw in the trailer. I wasn't implying that there is less than 10% of the promised puzzles, but that is area is less than 10% of the game.

that bitch is a gigantic retard, trailers used to have a higher quality than the base game, it can even lie to look better, treating it like some sort of early access is the biggest blunder you can do.

Jon already said that he was rushed to do that trailers and had multiple failed attempts with different publishers, which is a way better and less condescending respond to anything being bad in the trailer, way better than that cunt.

>>
>>728809809
-Continual introduction of novel and/or surprising applications of mechanics already presented
-Having many mechanics in the first place
-Hiding what is possible in plain sight, obscured by knowledge of the facts you learn later
-Meta inter-level/overworld puzzles by the late game
-Devilish solutions. It's generally best to have 1 intended solution. A puzzle solvable in 10 ways is no puzzle at all. Alt solutions are fine though
-Despite what idiots who don't understand the genre will tell you: DO tend towards patching out unintended solutions people discover. Unless on the rare occasion that unintended is still baller

Hey guys I have a very interesting topic for you:
This game. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1528120/ComPressure/

This is a game where I'm 50/50 on it being bad or I'm just too dumb for it. Actually thats a lie it's more like 30/70
See it's a Zach-like, and I'm quite certain it's literally the hardest of all Zach-likes. I can NOT for the life of me wrap my head around this game.
I get the strong impression there is a Baba level puzzle game somewhere in here, but obscured behind how poorly it's explained to the player.
I made this >>728817761 list so I don't consider myself dumb. But I'm not quite smart enough for Compressure.
>>
>>728817761
parabox and wormholes are not nearly that good id say parabox is about as easy as the portal games and it's ridiculous to call them shit just because they actually care about presentation
also you havent played any of the good zachtronics games
>>
>>728818516
nigger you've played the two easiest zachtronics games what do you know about difficulty?
>>
>>728817761
This list reads like absolutely megabait.
Fuck you.
>>
>>728818413
I was right with you right until I had my little epiphany. It's SO satisfying to solve. This is my favorite puzzle in the game so far. Want a hint? I'm a skilled hint crafter.
We can start with what you do think about the game.
>>
>>728818709
perfect example of >>728816106
new rule is you're a mega faggot if you just blankly call someones list "bait" without actually stating any problems with it, until then you're assumed to suck dick on the daily and only play the lowest tier of games, such as madden and 2K.
>>
blue prince got nominated for a tga award so I presume people still like puzzle games in 2025
>>
>>728799817
there's very few high fidelity puzzle games, while there's thousands of low fi ones at all quality levels. if anything they're targeting a gap in the market. if the requirements are reasonable it's not a bad move at all.

additionally half the point of the game is building the engine, which obviously needs advanced capabilities
>>
>>728818626
I've played ALL the Zachtronics games. I suppose I meant to just put a "Zachtronics in general" entry
Opus and Infinifactory just tickle me in cool factor. Yes I know they're the easiest.
>>
>>728818947

>>
>>728819038
Doesn't ring a bell. I've only beat the easiest Zachtronics games so far.
>>
>>728819326
so how would you know what the hardest zach-like is?
>>
>>728816265
>or one "EZ"? That doesn't qualify you to make that judgement.
Oh so we CAN'T judge people off of the way they speak or the words they use? You're telling me that doing an action once that I associate with certain behavior (that is commonly associated with that behavior) isn't enough of a standard to associate you with any specific group? That I can't easily predict your background based on your choice to use the term?
Wow. This is big. I'm just hearing this
>>
>>728819192
I did for Further Fields in Baba Is You and am still mad at myself for it. Never did it again.
I had a bum day that day and just wouldn't consider that the idea was to kill yourself TEMPORARILY which just would not occur to me. I went on to beat much harder puzzles without looking it up. Nearly tore my hair out for some puzzles in Meta but it's there I discovered the sheer power of taking a break/sleeping on it/thinking in the shower
Based shower-chan sees me through every time.
>>728819435
Well in full-context I suppose I don't. I can wrap my head around them all though, Compressure presented to me a never before seen conundrum on that front.
>>
>>728819862
Thanks for confirming "EZ" really stuck in your craw that bad lol
Not off such a small sample size we can't.
EZ was really just a more playful or whimsical spelling, get over yourself fag
>That I can't easily predict your background
People vastly overestimating their powers of "prediction" is the hallmark of a pseud. Or the type to have enjoyed Alex Jones back in the day as he would wholesale just make shit up he thought was quarterway plausible.

I just don't consider it "one of the best in the genre." If you support Trump at this point, it is likely because you want him to be an authoritarian. The issue is that I don't even fucking care if that's your position, Republicans are just too fucking scared because they're absolute pussies to admit that, and it's so fucking obnoxious. I'm not saying every Republican loves Hitler, I am saying that if you're supporting someone that's breaking every U.S. check on power, trying to conceal as much power into the executive power as possible (issuing far more E.O.'s than any previous President and passing it off as "policy", issuing far more pardons than any President in history), installing loyalists across every branch of government and trying to install them into what are supposed to be independent agencies (look at the federal reserve), threatening independent agencies their funding if they don't do EXACTLY what you want, then you're supporting someone who's an authoritarian. And that's fine. If that's what you want because you hate the trannys and the kikes, fine, but fucking christ, grow some balls and own up to it.

I quit after solving Cold Frustration. There are some really cool moments where you're convinced its unsolvable from the first second but then you figure it out and it's magical but most of the solutions are working backwards and figuring out what you can't do, once you rule those out it kinda solves itself because all the possibilities are so tightly packed it gets cumbersome. Maybe if you're smart you can actually think through the solutions like you would in other puzzle games.

traditionalist or conservative cultural beliefs do not inherently mean authoritarian.
There were plenty of historical societies (Roman Republic for example) that were very steeped in tradition and yet were not outright authoritarian in nature.
You are only speaking from the Twitter politics grifter paradigm.

see in that screencap, if i remember correctly, when you are in the red/pink areas it's actually more like a 2D sidescroller instead of top down four way movement, so you can go left and right and jump one block only but you're bound by gravity so you fall vertically and getting to the rock is tricky
and all the different areas are mashed together in messy ways instead of the neat 4 areas in the new game, but im sure there will be some crazy meta twists to break formula and justify the 1500 puzzles numbers, because i doubt it will be like 350 puzzles out of only 4 main mechanics

no offense I'm just jumping in on this one
but you're absolutely moving the goalposts here.
we're well beyond championing "traditional conservative cultural beliefs"
that anon already listed all the authoritarians things already happening right now, none of them have anything to do with traditionalism or conservative culture. It's strictly control.
You mean to tell me there was NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON who was conservative in the FBI to take it over? It had to be a podcaster yes man with 0 experience in criminal justice?

>I don't necessarily "support Trump" but do I think Harris with her Indian ancestry would have put restrictions on H1B visas? Hell no.
>So there can actually be nuance to this.
so your nuanced take is that Trump didn't either put restrictions on H1B either, BUT he's also doing hundreds of questionably legal things because no one is willing to hold him accountable?
It's okay to you that he's tripled his networth on crypto since his election, pardoned the binance guy CZ who admitted to fraud, and purposely sandbagged efforts to regulate crypto? Or his son in law teaming up with Saudis to buy up everything?
if you believe any of this is about culture you're being fucking scammed.

Hmm. I'll take your world for it. What psychologically happens to a players when he chews on a difficult puzzle is not something I'm inclined to think meshes with multiplayer. But I'm an antisocial who has never touched a single mmo with a ten foot pole so what do I know.

Probably just a random nonsense post, not even bait/trolling. But if I were to try to come up with an explanation, I'd say that this has something to do with changing rules of the world.

>erm you like Trump ergo I cannot work with you
This line of thinking doesn't work in a liberal society where you have to put your politics aside for mutual cooperation. Else it just festers cultural enclaves and tribalist power grabs which is inimical to liberalism. Trump is not so much more authoritarian that other presidents before him in this century but he is a populist and doesn't work with the established order of high political society very well.

Protip: Don't respond to people replying to day-old posts. 99% of the time, they're baiting for a (You).
See: The post below yours for a more egregious example.

I don't really care. If a question is interesting, I'll answer.

I'm not baiting for a you, I literally just came into the thread and read that post. You're literally

That has never been the point of why Blow makes games anyways. Popular streamers have always trashed his games, The Witness being an example despite it being the actual best spiritual successor to Myst. They are lost in their critique because they don't know design and they don't know the history. To them, it is strictly just a product to be bought and finagle with.

Stories in puzzle games are always hit or miss because the puzzles serve as narrative breaks that you have to then use logic rather than engaging with the theater of your mind which makes the plot flow incongruent. This applies to all games technically but puzzle games especially.

I've been trying Quantum Odyssey ever since I discovered it in one of these threads and I think I'm just gonna refund it since it can't find any satisfaction in doing the puzzles. It honestly just feels like university homework which I think is what the devs actually meant it to be.

Footage of automated testing of puzzles. Probably better to watch this on Youtube because of the 4MB file size limit.

other anons already said this but i really like the presentation of the grid
they could've not gave a fuck and used a simple grid overlay but they went the extra mile and integrated into the art
the water having that shimmering for the grid is honestly such a cool touch
this type of readability is pretty cool, props to the artists on this

The most notable thing in here is that the Priestess protects heroes from falling.

Why are you spoiling everyone on a puzzle game they potentially wanna play?
>>
>>728864464
Looks like there's going to be 2 different time periods for each character. You can see an old and young version for each character and it seems the bard matches with the queen. I also notice there's a golden human figure off to the left so maybe some meta final true endgame stuff.

This site is finished

I like it when threads last for quite long. Wish we had a puzzle video game board like /vst/. There the discussions are slower than on /v/ but they're also of higher quality and less shitposting.

Because the trailer told me fuck all, so I went on to do my own research. Most of what I posted is really basic, just a couple unrefined levels and showcasing of mechanics. Besides, this is the stuff that Blow himself was okay with showing on his streams. For when he is working on something he doesn't want to show, he hides the screen.
