Why do you think Bethesda refuses to rebuild civilization in any way at all? Am i really supposed to believe that people are hauling around hundreds of bottle caps so they can buy basic goods? In an in-game vacuum none of this makes sense. But as soon as you factor in outside elements everything makes perfect sense.

Proper cities would mean more characters, more systems and mechanics and we know the engine is already coming apart. Long distance travel and communication would cut back on the Bethesda loop of "something to explore/loot/kill every 20 seconds" which is what people are playing these games for. Don't need to walk there because i can just call the NPC - less emergent gameplay. A functioning society would destroy the wild wasteland aspect.

It's a 6 to 7/10 okay-ish. It plays a little too fast and loose with canon and is at its worst when it delves into Borderlands-tier "humor" (the first two episodes are especially shit), but can be surprisingly compelling and even impressive at times. Most of those times carried solo by Goggins, but still.
If you want a thoroughly bad adaptation, look at Halo or the Witcher, where you can see that the people in charge actively loathed the source material. The creators of TV Fallout don't shit on the franchise, they just occasionally mishandle it.

The production design (sets, props, costumes) and Walton Goggins' performance are good - even though the majority of his post-war character's scenes involve showing up, saying something cool, and shooting everyone - but that's the most charitable thing I can say about it.

The pacing is awful because there's eight episodes per season and approximately 5 principal characters:

The writing relies heavily on cliffhangers and mysteries, and the ones that were resolved in season 1 were resolved very poorly. There are a lot of loose, hanging threads to keep people watching. And the show does very little to capitalize on its setting, which is a core element of Fallout. I don't know why they decided to set the first season in LA, because it was basically fucking pointless.

tl;dr it's popcorn entertainment. It's not authentic to the games in any meaningful way, and it's not very good by itself.

Even Fallout 4 used cryonics conservatively, with the cryosleep pods in Vault 111 being sold to the test subjects as "decontamination pods". the show, in contrast, has billboards for "cryosuites" as if it's a commercially available technology. i don't need to explain that the schism between the past and present is a defining aspect of the setting and aesthetic of Fallout. the exceptions, like ghouls, gain their intrigue from this disconnect. it's simply stupid to reintroduce cryonics as a cheap plot twist behind the identity of a character who is not only immediately killed off, but killed OFF-SCREEN.

not satisfied with this, they decided to 3.) nuke one of the principle factions of the west coast setting. again, off-screen. everything involving the NCR in season 1 is so poorly written that it isn't worth discussing.

The difference is that under Interplay/Black Isle, Fallout wasn't PURELY about resource scarcity. The world was rebuilding after the apocalypse and we saw that there was stability in many parts of the wasteland, even in New Vegas which is an area at war. However this didn't fit Bethesda Fallout which is a permanent wasteland so even though it DOES have cold fusion they made it so Vault Tec owned the patent and GECKs were rare as fuck for some reason (even though 2 implies every vault has a GECK) because otherwise the wasteland would eventually heal and not be a permanent wild west for thousands of years

The games were deliberately about the post war world and how human natures causes history to repeat. The pre-war world was not important, they started a war over some ultimately petty reasons, and now we have a new world living with the consequences.

You're right, and this is part of the reason why I lost interesting in the IP. While I can accept that Fallout never had solid canon, and that there were some major tonal changes between 1 and 2 (and then 3/new vegas, 4 and 76).
