The first movie is just one of those things you expect to be a kids movie and it's... fine with that expectation. Only really worth watching for some novelty.The second movie doubles down on all the worst elements of the third and is only watchable if you're a real Sonicfag. Because people just really, REALLY LOVE human side characters in fucking Sonic.The third movie somehow manages to fix that sinking ship into something good by giving more focus to what people want and doing it fairly well.

The Sonic movies got better every film. I like S1 and S2 but S3 I consider truly good. The Mario movie was also pretty good in my eyes. Who knows how long they can keep up the quality / actors coming back, but at the very least, we got 1 good Mario movie and 3 good Sonic films. Its nice. Both characters deserve it.

He and his wife and sister in law and her fiance and everyone else feel like dead weight in every other movie. Donut Dad (because he's now a dad figure instead of a buddy) only serves the third movie by giving Sonic his Shadow moment where he chooses whether or not to finish off Shadow, which is thematically-relevant to Shadow's arc. But this is Sonic who has to make the decision, Donut Dad just awkwardly drops the thematic exposition at the start (You didn't let your pain change who you are) before getting drop kicked into an ambulance by Shadow. His actual other scenes are mind-numbing watching him and his childless G-rated wife sit in their living room wearing sweaters waiting for furbaby Sonic to do something.Shadow and Gerald had actual depth in the third movie, there are clever ways everything is written, little subtleties that build up who they are. Shadow fighting Sonic is suicide by cop, he goads him into fighting and ultimately gives up so Sonic can end his pain and prove that he had no choice but to be the monster that everyone saw him as. That's the stuff that was worth watching.

I think it would be more interesting if there were still only one Metal Sonic, powered by all of the quills Eggman has collected, leading a group of Silver and Mecha Sonics as a Stone/Eggman failsafe.
