What makes FF8 great is the military theming. It's cool and unique for RPGs. Military themes are common in other genres but for an RPG it stands out and they have an unique fantasy take on it too, you're not just dudes with guns in cammo. All the coolest moments happen when you're doing some kind of military operation. The story weakens over time because it slowly abandons its military theme as the game progresses.
