They're panicking because hardware shortages just caused the cost of production to skyrocket.
Even if the original plan was to sell at a slight loss just to get more people on the steam sale hamster wheel, their current profit projections are likely very grim.
>>

Considering the RAM prices, $800 or not releasing at all

it will be $2000 and a commerical failure. They will run it for most of 2026 then dump whatever stock they have left during the summer 2026 sale and forget it ever existed, like their steam machines...

they don't know the price either
I'm sure they had it calculated before RAM decided to be worth its weight in gold
now they're figuring out what the new price for an acceptable loss is
>>
>>728877447
I thought Valve explicitly stated they don't plan to sell at a loss cause they don't see consoles as competitors, so basically this shit was already overpriced at conception without economic shenanigans making it 4x more expensive. This thing is going to flop and it's not because it's a bad idea but just that the stars misaligned to spite Valve.

It’s six times more powerful than steam deck? Well my steam deck runs games like RE4 remake and Elden Ring pretty damn good. I’d love to have this connected to my tv to officially replace my PS5. As long as I’m minimum getting PS5 level graphics I’m happy.
>>
>>728876793
Well it's gonna be like double what they wanted it to be and there isn't much they can do about it. It's a decent idea fucked over by bad times from this retarded AI bubble where 95% of companies aren't getting their money's worth out of it. If Valve waited a few years for CEOs to realize AI is not an infinite productivity and money machine they'd be able to capitalize on a crashed market where Nvidia humbly comes back to selling consumer GPUs as its prime thing. But they didn't.

i thought i saw the appeal but now i don't. if it's basically a more expensive ps5, what's the point? is it just going to sell on novelty alone?
i saw a post that said most people on steam have worse thardware than the gabecube, so maybe they'll be able to sell it to retards who don't know any better?

it's very strange. especially with ram being fucked for potentially years at this point, what are they trying to do with this product?

Honestly, why can't they just sell these things without RAM?

Most gamers probably have some old stuff floating around, that they can throw into a build.
Or can buy used and cheaper on ebay.

>>728896340
Better than paying $350—700bux for something decent from an official retailer, just on RAM alone.

And honestly, this steam machine is dead if it's 1000bux out the gate.
With RAM and now SSDs expected to soar in pricing, they're at least the easiest components to install for newbies.

Cut out the cost of those. Market an optional, barebones Gabecube, for those who have extra components floating around, or just want to dip their toes into PCbuilding. Let them feel the joy of plugging in their own legos, and then troubleshooting their proprietary box when it fails to start.

It will be great.
If it's easy to take apart...

>>
I'm not optimistic about the price at all. I think we were meant to know the price by now but AI companies buying up the world's supply of ram and SSDs completely caught Valve like deer in the headlights. This is probably getting delayed a year to see where the market is at then.

>>
>>728876793
They might delay it due to the insane RAM pricing situation. There's also a widespread sentiment that the AI bubble is gonna pop at any moment in which case memory prices are gonna crash hard.

Yes*
>*480p upscaled to 4k
>>
>>728876793
>>728877204
Sadly this is probably the realistic take and why valve is hesitant to release the price because it's basically just a PC in cube form running on custom software. And they can't pull of the same tactic like sony/microsoft and eat the cost and regain their money from selling games
>>
>>728893161
I can see valve being insanely based and not accepting bulk orders
>>
>>728876793
With the fluctuations in prices right now, and the chance that some of their shit could get hit with a new import tax out of nowhere at anytime, they're probably waiting until the last minute to not have to panic and change it risking a loss on the public relations front or risk being forced to eat the cost going up to maintain good customer relations.
>>
>>728902979
They won't, it'll the same as Steam Deck, aka one per account until the order completes

Exactly. You used to be able to put together a modest little rig for $800, but not anymore. RAM and SSD prices are in clown world thanks to every AI startup hoarding like it’s Y2K all over again. Now you’re lucky if that gets you a used 3060 and enough RAM to run Discord. For better or worse, $750 for a fully assembled, cooled, and pre-configured box with SteamOS doesn’t sound as laughable as it would’ve two years ago.

>>728904035
fuck off I'm not a zoomer. that's just how it is, old man. IMO phones should still have removable batteries and headphone jacks, but that's just not how it is.

you can still get that stuff though, but unfortunately only from China. Still, I'd rather be spied on by the Chinese who can't do shit to me, than by spied on by the Americans who can
>>

This is unironically a huge fucking downside. I've had my rig for close to 15 years now and have had to replace a faulty psu once; it cost me less than 100 burgerbux. Imagine having to shill out 800+ just because a component reaches its eol.
