>>728916559Its very very good. There's a humility and genuine grace to it. A lot of media that tries to tackle topics of death and community ends up feeling trite or sanctimonious but Haibane Renmei just feels nice. The characters have depth without being overly complex, there's enough ambiguity to need to puzzle out your own interpretation of the themes while still providing concrete answers to the questions that matter, it ends when it's done. I have anime I like more than it but I'd struggle to say they surpass it.

>>728918881Princess Tutu is the standout. No small part of that fondness is it being the first anime I watched, but it's genuinely stellar. I finished rewatching it just a few days ago and it actually does a really interesting job of complementing Haibane Renmei as they both touch on themes of unrequited friendship, isolation in a walled off community of strange and hostile rules, and being forced into a role for reasons that aren't your fault. Also both fixated on ravens, funnily enough. From there it's shows I can't defend in quite as intellectual a manner like K-On, Yuru Camp, and Turn A Gundam.
