New technology forcing people to relearn things and expand the work force so there's more cooks in the kitchen for each part of a map so when the guy making the map gets an idea for a cool thing to do with say baking a shadow when it ends up in the hands of the concept art guy it gets muddied, then gets handed down to the lighting guy it gets even more diluted, then finally ships in the game they had to tweak and cut so much you'd be hard pressed to find there was even a creative concept at the core of it because so many people had their input that what ended up in the players hands is what worked and had to ship.
