Mother 3 is better designed as an RPG but more linear. Less OHKOs, more forgiving enemies and difficulty and the rhythm battle system is great even if a bit flawed. It flows better and it's more fun to play, but you could argue that the archaic parts to EB's battle system are a big part of the series' charm. It fixes a lot of EB's bullshit and pain points, such as backtracking to the healer or hospital, the slow movement speed in the Overworld, and the slow and painful inventory management. Having the Item Guy follow you around was a genius idea instead of having to call Tracy every time. There's less PSI variety, but the game tries to make up for it with the skills system.

It has a better plot, it's way more emotive and it has better written characters. To this day I'm impressed about how they designed the NPCs with such care and attention, and how they keep coming up through the story. You really build relationships with them. Earthbound simply has 10 Mr. Ts around. Some of Earthbound's NPCs are better, like Venus, however.

The audio is worse because of the limitations of the GBA, but the graphics are better and it's a joy to look at on a big screen. I actually prefer the soundtrack in 3, because Sakai has a more natural composition style so to say. Hip Tanaka is very much a "wacky alternate experimental" musician kind of guy, which also is great, but the baton touch was refreshing.

Neither game eclipses each other but I'm more inclined to revisiting Mother 3 than Earthbound these days. Nintendo is never going to localize it because of the political and racist undertones in it, such as how Waito Piggu invades the beautiful island nation to racemix, destroys the familial unit through Globohomo and introduces capitalism through a (((Happy Merchant))) who sneaks in Monke immigrant slaves through a system of underground tunnels, and who's part of a nomadic, quite literally gypsy tranny tribe who ACK after they fulfill their purpose.

Red is culturally important in Japan and China, and the O in mother is a rising sun but occluded. As a matter of fact, the plot point about the rising dragon is Itoi's ultimate statement about who will win the culture war. That's why the series uses Red.

A note on the logo, Itoi as a matter of fact said that the design comes from one time when he went to a funeral and he felt that the hearse's design was creepy due to how it uses metal and wood, two materials which are completely different from each other. The game uses this concept throughout, of juxtaposed things which shouldn't be together, which ends up causing a certain feeling of unnerving creepiness.

The big boss reveal aside, you have to play Earthbound to really see the message pattern that people will fuck shit up for everyone if given the means and opportunity. You can't really separate the two games - they are a single product. The warnings against greed, media consumption, and reckless scientific pursuit only hit has hard as they do with two games because that way there's a pattern rather than arguing over what is or isn't a metaphor.
