It's an alright game. Genuinely. It takes all the usual zombie movie/apocalyptic tropes, mashes them into a decently presented form, puts together some alright third-person shooting mechanics, and manages to do it all well, even great at times. But that's it. It's a hodgepodge of things that already existed and had been done hundreds of times over. It plays into every single trope possible, every video game mechanic people have seen hundreds of times, and tells a story you can see if any movie (even in a bunch of games).

Despite that, you straight up saw some journalists at the time that made a claim that video games really didn't try to tell a story before TLoU. I think there was a quote of someone basically saying there was Tetris, Mario, and nothing in between before TLoU came along and showed people what video games could truly do. Not to mention the fact that it got a sequel, television show with two seasons, Ellie becoming a character Sony tried to push as some new icon, all kinds of nonsense.

People still put it as one of the best games of all time, in which it consistently hits in the top 10-20 games on lists out there. Shit's nuts. It's a "good" game. It does what it does well. But people act like it was the first game to take itself seriously.
