What the fuck were they thinking?
They were thinking>This shit better be able to run on a Dreamcast
>>728919969I don't get it either. No new enemies or weapons. Very disappointing.
>>728919969It's okay. Just okay at best. As a kid though? Holy fuck I loved it more half life are you kidding me hell yes.

More like mid shift, heh

It was better than Freeman's boring moviegame campaign.
Any thoughts on the Black Mesa Blue Shift remake? Seems they have almost finished work on that now.
>>728920451fuck yeah blue shift
>>728920568haven't played it since they added Focal Point but it was damn solid, some character additions were a bit ... dubious but to be desu I was concentrating on the gameplay and not molesting the NPCs much
>>728920568I don't know much about it, but given that the developers thought it best to drastically alter and expand Xen, turning a fairly short part of the original game into an exhausting spinoff story – "Freeman: The Xen Chronicles" – I expect them to take even greater liberties in their reimagining of Blue Shift, because it's the least loved of all the Half Lifes and fans are not defensive of it. Very few will complain if the devs depart from the "original vision" of Blue Shift, so they'll probably use it as a canvas for their own creations.
>>728919969Trying to give fans something to play while they waited for Half Life 2
>>728921342You're an absolute moron if you don't like new Xen. The On a Rail change I'm not a fan of, but original Xen deserved the change.
>>728922205>Valve did it for the fans! No, it was just another quick buck towards Gabe's yacht fund.
>>728920568Xen is even more of a slog now and goes on for too long
>>728924364>Le too long!R-r-r-r-r-r-retard
>>728920568They did a great job at making you care for the scientists/guards posse that you form up for the end. Shame that most of them will die.
>>728922292>You're an absolute moron if you don't like new Xen.Their version of Xen is reminiscent of Abe's Odyssey: you have to rescue the benign slave species from their oppressive factory-prison, and the challenge lies in solving the frequent puzzles. That's not a bad concept in itself, but the execution is boring. These devs don't have the skill to make puzzles as intriguing and fun as those found in Valve's games. Even the oft-derided see-saw puzzles in HL2 are better than the tedious shit put before us in BM Zen.
>>728924879But in all my playthroughs of HL1, I never, NEVER, gave a fuck about the vortigaunts. Black Mesa was the first time I ever cared and I really went out of my way to be careful with my fire on Xen.The point of extending Xen is so it isn't throw away, so somebody could come away from the game saying that their favorite part of BM was Xen. With HL1, you can almost feel the devs apathy with how short it is and nobody but contrarians would say it's their favorite. BM does a lot of effective subtle storytelling stuff with the Gonarch so it's not just some semi end boss that gets quickly forgotten for Nihalanth, which fucks up the pacing of boss encounters.
>>728925090>I never, NEVER, gave a fuck about the vortigauntsAnd that was no problem at all. Why should vortigaunts matter to the HL1 player? The principal reason why vortigaunts are given this larger role in BM is that some players (autists) can't just ignore the retcon in HL2 that made Gordon a renowned hero among the vortigaunts. "But Gordon scarcely helped the vortigaunts in HL1," they whine. "This needs explaining!" And so BM went to a great deal of effort to explain it for us. Thank god for that, now I can finally sleep at night knowing the disjuncture between the two games has been bridged. It was worth turning Xen into a complete slog most people will not want to play again to make sure we have seamless narrative continuity.
>>728925819Well I like the new Xen and while I hate HL2, BM works better as a lead in, because Valve doesn't care about HL1 or its tone at this point.
>>728920070The combat sections weren't even hard. 80% of the vents were just. >Turn corner>Headcrab ambushes you unavoidably
The HECU were so cool.
>>728922292NTA, I enjoyed the visual overhaul in BM, and I think the strictly remade content is better, my issue is with what they added on top made the whole thing feel like a sloglike if you only look at the BM xen content and levels that were in HL1 then it's a direct improvement, but if you take into account al the extra padding that is brand new then I think it actually becomes a bit weaker than the original xen, because at least that is FAST, like I can complete the entirety of the xen chapters of HL1 in 15 minutes, but BM extends it to be an hour or more and it just drags
>>728920568all the experts are saying its safe and effective
>>728920568Oh, they're remaking the expansions as well? That ought to be fun. Why are they doing Blue Shift first?
>>728922292Interloper still sucks, and it's a much longer chapter than the original
>>728919969blue shift is good. shut your dumb zoomer mouth.
>>728919969They were thinking>”Every version of Half-Life will have its own expansion. For Dreamcast, let’s make one about the security guards!”>”Dreamcast port is cancelled, but we don’t want our work to go to waste. Let’s just release this expansion on PC.”
>>728928865It's a different modder team. They decided to make one for Blue Shift because it's short/small enough to remake.
>>728931538I see.
I enjoyed it more than the base game
>>728920451Sorry gaben, I'm taking the cat girl
