The close camera has you remembering where they are in your head and listening to sound cues instead of just seeing it all from far away. nuGOW isn't a Platinum Games game but its not a movie game either. It has decent combat that can be pretty interesting with little. I thought it would be worse than it actually is. Long story short: the nuGoW games are amateurishly designed games with zero replay value, even if you cut out all the walk and talk sections. Some single player games are still played years later because they’re simply fun and don’t waste your time. GoW 2018, ragnarok and many other sony games aren’t among them.

The RPG elements are meaningless, they don't effect the combat all that much it feels more like they were developed backwards (that the final skills were made and then nerfed at the lower levels to justify "RPG elements"). The itemization is poor, no item ever felt like a significant upgrade other than weapon unlocks but those aren't great either because they didn't want to force specialization so all the weapons are different wiffle bats. Most of the big story bosses are quick time event heavy (though this was so in the original series as well). The game takes control away from the player constantly while forcing you to walk slow or stand around while the story unfolds (you can blame half life 2 and gears of war for popularizing this). All in all it's a very pretty game with some great voice acting, that plays like shit but makes you feel cool for having pressed X to win and being rewarded with pretty animations.

The Muspelheim challenges for example especially bring this quality out since there's special requirements just to succeed at each stage. It's really just the cooldown attacks that are the most spectacle they no doubt were inspired by Overwatch/moba's to include, but the different options you can choose from to determine your approach like Nero's arm-breaking moves in DMC5 makes up for it.It's definitely not exactly DMC/Bayo/MGR/NG with how supremely flexible and jumpy those games are but it succeeds at its own system, compared to the prior games' genuine 'just mash square' gameplay I think it's an actual improvement. A shame the spear is in the bogged-down sequel since its stickybomb mechanic looked nice too and no heavy-hitting hammer at all even for Ragnarok's own postgame was lame.
