JRPG role playing comes from a kind of self-insert wish fulfilment. Think about Cloud and Squall from FF. Both those characters are cool brooding loner dudes that a lot of teenage boys want to be, and they’re surrounded by attractive women and cool guys who look up to them as a leader as they go on adventures with them. This is why you can name Cloud and Squall whatever you want and build them however you want despite them having canonical names and personalities. It’s why you get dialogue options for them at certain points too that affect some character relationships.
