sword combat in this game feels like you're mashing enemies with blunt rusty swords that might as well be metal pipes or pieces of rebar or something.I find it deeply unsatisfying and shit.
yeah I don't understand how this game got so popular I got so bored after the first few missions I went to go beat the thieves subquest plotline for the cool armor then dropped it immediately afterward I was so boredto this day I have no idea what happens in the story after walking up the huge mountain to the icy temple and I never will
>>728940502What would the alternative be considering that the combat system is based around stats, and enemies die faster the higher your stats are? How could you have it be satisfying at the beginning without losing the sense of progression?
>>728940818The game is greater than the sum of its parts. Bethesda games couldn’t stand on gameplay alone, but the sheer scope of them is impressive and gives an experience that’s difficult to replicate.
>>728940991just make it like dark souls or dragons dogma combat it's not hard
>>728941280It probably would be hard to do considering that those games aren’t immersive sim inspired sandbox games abd thus, their smaller scopes have them more time to polish the combat. This is putting aside the fact that these combat systems aren’t that deep either. The bigger the scope of your game is, the more you have to make compromises on certain aspects. This is the unfortunate truth of game development.
>>728941827ok then they should have at least made it like morrowinds combat.
>>728941943>miss>miss>missThat would be even worse. They dropped it for a reason.
>>728941160>greater than the sum of its partsaka "it's objectively bad but it was a formative experience for me so it's good"
Are there any games with good first person melee combat to begin with
>>728940502There are a lot of reasons why everyone ends up as a stealth archer. That is one of them.
>>728942414vermintide/darktide
>>728940502Metal pipes would at least have weightTry PVC
>>728942771Another reading is that Bethesda stealth has been not!Thief since Oblivion
>>728942414I remember Breakdown being fun, if a bit jank.
>>728943142The stealth mechanics in Bethesda games are surprisingly solid since they’re basically just slightly dumbed down Thief mechanics. On top of that, The Dark Brotherhood questlines in Oblivion and Skyrim and the Thieves Guild questline in Oblivion are the two best questlines they’ve ever done. I really feel Bethesda would make a solid Hitman/Dishonored/Assassin’s Creed clone, and if they just focused on stealth, they’d be able to spend more time polishing the game rather than trying to include a bit of everything and it being jank as a result.
>>728940502>>728940818It's extremely typical for RPGs to have bad or bland combat. Their priorities are typically to simulate a world or experience as much as possible which means a very broad scope; devs prioritize a lot of mechanics that are merely functional (if that) rather than a few mechanics that are very refined. There are some exceptions like Diablo and Dark Souls but I'd question whether those are really in the same genre as Baldur's Gate and Skyrim.
>>728940502just mod it
>>728944135They aren’t. Diablo and Dark Souls are ARPGs, whereas Skyrim draws from the lineage of Ultima. DaS and Diablo are better compared to games like Kingdom Hearts, Nier and Dragon’s Dogma.
>>728940502no it doesn't. It feels like you have a pistol but the range is 30cm and the animation is a sword
>>728944426Well, sure, but if you directly state that "Skyrim is clearly inspired by Ultima/Ultima Underworld design philosophies and is functionally an Immersive Sim RPG albeit a casually accessible one" the ImmSim fandom will piss and shit themselves and start screaming at you that Skyrim doesn't count.
>>728941827this defending of billion dollar companies is cringe and you should probably just kys, pretending to have the faintest idea what game dev is like. the combat in elder scrolls sucks, period. if you enjoy it then you enjoy sucky combat, good for you.
>>728940502It have big map, that looks nice and full of content, even if said content is 3 same dungeons copy-pasted around entire map. There is no solid gameplay system gameplay wise all storylines sucks, almost everything sucks, but map is big enough so you spend something like 20 hours exploring it while listening to soulfull music, also fact that gameplay wise only style of playing that have progression is stealth archer(archery gives you zoom and slow motion in addition to flat out better stats) make you spend even more time in game, this is enough for normies to be satisfied.Game itself is modding engines and anyone who played more than 20 hours in skyrim will never again play vanilla, everyone have list of 100+ mods.Skyrim was lucky that it was generic rpg when video were becaming popular among normies so it was baby's first rpg, it might not be good game but they have no point of reference.
this from the same board who considers rollslop in a full set of armour 'immersive' while your oversized weapon clips through enemiestop kek
>>728942071Yeah, normgroids can't be expected to be able to read or remember what they selected for their class 2 minutes ago
>>728940502I'm having fun with the combat.
>>728940502yup the combat is bad>>728940818it's a big sandbox open world fantasy game. name any game similar to what it offers. you cant.
>>728940502Vanilla is shit and it still amazes me that retards play it in 2025 when retard proof auto install modlists exist.
>>728940818This.>Get the game in the Steam sale after not playing it since release>Get to Whiterun and do a few quests>I'm already bored to tears and considering making a new Morrowind character instead because at least for all its flaws Morrowind is an actual RPG.
>>728947149Most /v/ermin are brown and tech illiterate.
>>728947079I can't name any good ones because open-world is dogshitthe more emphasis there is on making a massive sandbox """""rpg""""" the less focus there is on actually making a snappy well polished gaming experience. All emphasis is placed on fucking around in the open world and less about enjoying a well crafted, well thought-out story
