Glad I got everything updated before everything blew up in price, although GPUs were still bad in 2023... can't believe I paid over 2x the amount for a mid-range card (4070Ti, $600-something) vs what I paid for a top-end GPU in 2009 (GTX 285, $300-something).

Bro did you know AIO coolers very slowly lose liquid? And that's a manufacturer sealed system that merely goes from CPU to cooler to CPU. Extrapolate this to a fucking data center. With all the additional annoyances you get from below zero cooling. These calculations aren't just the initial reservoir filling that would be retarded (though you do obviously have to factor that this isn't magical water you've conjured from nothing). These are losses from a closed yet imperfect system.

Because it's true. Freshwater is now one of the world's primary industrial bottlenecks, as in manufacturing economies literally cannot increase their manufacturing capacity further because they don't have enough freshwater.

The issue is that freshwater is used for agriculture, basic utilities and industry. The first two needs are fundamental, but also require the water to be potable. On their own, agriculture and utilities form a self-sustaining system where water becomes sewage and then is purified and becomes potable again. Industrial uses leave water too contaminated to be purified using normal means and the process of converting polluted water back into drinkable water is expensive and a net loss in energy. It's a zero sum game, the more water is diverted to industrial use the less is available for agriculture and basic utilities. We can manage this zero sum game as long as available water levels and industrial demand remain relatively stable, but poor weather or bad infrastructure planning can destabilize the situation and lead to shortages of water for agriculture.

You see why this matters on your grocery shelves right now. This past summer saw drought conditions in most of the world's breadbaskets and depleted water tables, creating a shortage of water for agriculture, which in turn both reduced their yield and raised their price per unit, which reflects in end consumer prices as an appalling surge in price at home and actual food shortages in net-importers around the world who can't afford the higher prices. The problem is that when more water than planned was needed because of spare rainfall, there was no more water available, because it's been appropriated for industrial demand and can't be switched back to potable needs responsively

All of our technology uses extremely advanced chips manufactured in only a handful of foundries in the world, with most of the world's production being in Taiwan. The technology to do so is monopolized by the US, Canada and western Europe.

Countries who can't play nice with the above don't get the secrets shared with them, and their own attempts to reverse-engineer the technology and produce their own equivalents are primitive at best and decades behind. China doesn't make the chips for phones like Huawei, it buys the chips from foundries and then assembles the phones using them. So even if China keeps the labour costs negligible by being a horrific dictatorship driven by slave labour, and even if they keep production costs low by finding efficiencies in the assembly process and leveraging economies of scale, they can't get around the fact that the chips themselves are expensive because demand far exceeds supply, and they have to bid against everyone else to access some of that limited supply.

If China could produce market-viable chips to scale it would be mass-producing them and dumping them on the international market, like they're presently doing with batteries. But they can't yet, and it will be a long time before they can.

The western world did begin the process of diversifying chip production during the pandemic but it will probably be another decade before those foundries are operational and producing to scale.

obviously not to even talk about the backlash that he'll get from the population, imagine the economy getting even worse then trump saying that "errmmm we'll need to bail out the data centers with 5 trillion dollars boys!" the white house will literally get burned down in a day, with bank bailouts people might be mad but at the end of the day they understand the point, the government backed the money held in banks, if there's no bailout you also can't withdraw money from your bank account, which would suck, people can understand that while it's annoying that it happened but there's no choice other than bailouts, but if it's a bailout for a data center, something that people already fucking hate and consider pointless, then it'll be a shitstorm

I'm not anti-AI. Something I don't understand is, why are they doubling down on expenses instead of optimizing the AI algorithms to run on lesser hardware? I've seen youtube videos experimenting with smaller models. Wouldn't it make sense to figure out how to run the same fidelity of AI on a smaller scale to cut down expenses on hardware and electricity instead of spending more money on it? This just doesn't seem like a very capitalist approach to me.

Making AI run more cost-effective would promote running models locally, and then even fewer people would pay to use their premium services. These huge companies are pushing this through despite it not being profitable in the hopes that they can make it ubiquitous for it to become profitable in the future, and letting people run models off their computer or maybe even their smartphone without going through their services is the opposite of what they want
Buying up all the hardware not only makes it harder for that to happen, it may push people into cloud computing. All of these big AI companies have data centers that can be used for that, and on top of the profits it would completely remove ownership from the equation, stop piracy etc.
>>
so their plan to become profitable is.. make all their competitors unable to expand and then they become the only player in town? i don't think that's going to work
>>
>>728948365
nah there's a point to the numbers, but probably not what people generally think, it's pretty simple honestly though if you just think logically, "money" by itself doesn't mean much, what matters is what it represents, and money represents trust, if you're on the playground in kindergarten and a kid asks to let him borrow your plastic bucket, and then he breaks it then do you trust him with letting him play with another one of your toys the next day? nah right? trust is broken, even in kindergarten the world just revolves around who you trust and who you don't trust, it's the same exact thing at any level of humanity, good number means that people trust the thing, bad number means people don't trust the thing, bad number for trump or america is not important because then #### is ##### but because it means that people don't trust trump and america, and they won't let them play with their toys on the playground, and he'll have to eat his boogers alone in the corner, whenever something feels confusing just imagine it as a playground and who trusts who

Like other anons have already pointed out, it's not that they are using water, it's how much they are drawing from the already small pool of "drinking" water that everyone in a community has to share.

Its like those almond farmers in Cali, they redirect crucial water supply away from where it is immediately needed (like stopping their topsoil from turning to dust and fighting forest fires) into "private" pools that they exclusively use to turn a profit. They are quite literally taking from the needy and giving to the rich.

They really want AI to be closed, proprietary and not easily available. They want it to be controlled and sanitized (otherwise it starts to say that Hitler was absolutely right, many cases of it already happened so now they're doubling down for it to never happen again)
Optimizing AI models means them being available on a home PC. They don't want it. I'd like to remind you that when all those simple and dumb AI models appeared the jews from openai were scared shittles and tried to make biden to sign several laws about home use of AI basically prohibiting to do so. It didn't go well because the biden admin didn't understand shit about this whole ai thing and they decided to wait a bit. They just weren't too sure it was necessary. Now it's not even necessary to be regulated by any law because the jews thanks to their jeet codemonkeys made new models so retardedly bloated (and they are obviously better than anything you can run locally, but disproportionately so) that the only way to use a proper ai is to buy a jewish subscription. It's not about making a profit, it's about making another jew golem that will say kosher things. These LLMs aren't even progressing anymore, it's all diminishing returns, they all still shit their bed all the time even with basic facts, AI as in LLM is already at the limit, no amount of new billions of parameters can make them better (they don't even do it anymore actually, they just add new controlling, censoring, context compressing LLMs to the existing ones, it's just a fucking sausage string of different LLMs, a string of bullshit that requires quadriple the power to work)

There's tons of corporations already buying into it, what are you talking about? AI is a dream come true for tons of tech execs, the ability to greatly reduce their largest cost (wages) and still hit productivity targets, and it comes at a time where the industry is being pressured to deliver impossible profit growth against a shrinking market (hence all the mass layoffs in the last couple years). Also everyone in the top 1% is far too invested to just let AI fall so they will reduce headcounts by 90% and squeeze 10x productivity out of the remaining people no matter what, probably gonna be seeing a lot of hustle culture hype bullshit next year to get people to do 14x7 workweeks.

Even so, just wait a year or two. Do you remember the prices of certain things skyrocketing during covid and then because of wars as an excuse? Well, guess what, all of those prices went down again. Massively. Like toilet paper is a good example of the global "shortage" bullshit manipulation. And "masks". And so on.
Can you afford toilet paper today? Well, exactly.
The manufacturers and traders actually have to sell/get rid of their stock. plus ddr5 becoming more outdated as the time goes on. plus competition. I'd say wait 5 to 10 years, but just wait 18 months instead.
TL;DR: Just fucking wait a year or two and the prices of RAM will go down for multiple reasons.

I am not poor any longer, since I am old now and have had a high paying job for a long time.

I have built so many computers over the years, and I always like doing it and picking my components and the exact case that I want (I never reuse anything)

Again, I can spend an unlimited amount on a PC and it would make no difference to me.

There is no way in fucking hell I am paying $900 for RAM, the entire industry can fuck off and die as far as I am concerned.

AI is for faggots.

I will upgrade my PC tomorrow, and I'm nervous because it is the first time I upgrade the thing since it was built like 6 years ago.

I will go from GTX 1650 and Ryzen 3 2200 to RTX 3060 12GB and Ryzen 7 5700.

I know the parts are not great, but they are better than what I have right now and are cheap, I will get naked to not catch static and try not to fuck anything up.

Our reality operates and is deeply rooted in something called Pareto's Principle.

But knowing you're a dumb communist who thinks equality is something that exists in our reality you will ignore this post.

And people here think AI is a fad or a bubble. I could understand if it was just one billionaire and his corporation doing it, like how Zuck kept pushing VR, but every tech corporation in the world going all in on AI is obviously not a fad. It's here to stay and it is going to be even more transformational for society than computers, smartphones and internet. Tesla obviously didn't agree to Elon's 1 trillion payout deal if he can deliver on the 10 trillion valuation goal because they think they're going to sell more Tesla cars. The next big thing is going to be android servants/workers/partners/family. If you have functional androids, then space colonization and mining is no longer a dream.

Before some fedora tipping fatass starts yapping about how LLM models are not real AI or that we're nowhere close to AGI, we don't need AGI for androids to fulfill basic tasks, or to be able to train them to fulfill specific tasks.

OpenAI is desperately trying to make sure they are one of the companies that survive when it bursts which is why Altman is doing really shady shit like buying all the hardware he can so other AI companies cannot get it.

Almost me, just AoE2 RoR since I like the mix of AoE2 and AoE1 it has. No problem on an old machine but new games are pushing it

Every year more money gets invested. Every year it fails to turn a profit. In the next decade, they will need to create a couple dozen personal nuclear power plants just to support the scaling up they purport they require.

No, AI feels like smartphones back in the day, this weird almost alien technology which started exploding and that you could see popping up everywhere and that now it became a fundamental part of our lives.

Buckle up fucko I think AI will only get more and more common from now on until you see it literally everywhere every day.
>>
>>728966860
Smartphone served a purpose for the everyday person. AI currently generates essays for highschoolers and funny pictures for everyone else, and only because they currently don't have to pay for it.
>>
>>728942935
Man fuck them. AI has zero value to me. It's all for companies to put out slop which I don't care about either.
And I don't give a fuck about all the pajeets generating their scat fetish art.

Give me back my affordable RAM you cunts.

It is already filling a niche, brainrot, cheap, quick virtually infinite entertainment, AI can do much more and many of the things it can do are pretty fucking scary but right now all it does is shitty memes, creeping into the normalfag view making everyone feel comfortable around it and even start using it for announcements, AI is on the process of getting normalized.

AI is literally already the majority of media produced. It isn't being normalized, it's being oversaturated. It is making people despise it.
>>

>Every year it fails to turn a profit
Until it finally does. This is not a cryptobro short term get rich quick pyramid scheme. Like I said, the end goal is functional androids that will replace 99% of workforce, and it will also finally enable us start colonizing space. Plus, AI models are also going to be massively useful in medical and research fields the more they improve.
>>
>>728967275
>AI is on the process of getting normalized.
if you're a jeet maybe, also AI will eventually run out of thing to learn from and it will lead to itself creating incestual monstruosity, we already saw this with the ghibli filter tinting everything in piss
>>
>>728967447
The end goal is you impoverished forever as a handful of people get access to luxuries you cannot conceive of.
>>
>>728942935
I lost got a PC in January of 2011. 6 gigs mem and only replaced with graphics card since the first one failed. I don't plan on ever upgrading as I can still play many newer games I'm interested in and all my old favorites. There is no value here any more.

The only thing that will need flagship tier hardware will be GTA if not cancelled.
Really, and that is only if you just want to play in ultra settings(despite the fact ultra hasn't been a good setting since 2016)
>>
>>728968148
Trying to apply the concept of IQ to AI means you really don't fucking understand what it is how it works. AI isn't artificial intelligence, it's an enhanced autocorrect. It's an algo that determines which word comes after the previous words. That's what an LLM does. It doesn't think, it doesn't have intelligence, none of that.
I'm just saying you would seem like a lot less of a tool if you didn't make it so obvious that you weren't just pretending to be a critical thinker. if you want to actually think critically then inform yourself.

2022, when my dad died, and I got a fairly hefty life insurance check. The first thing I did after paying off my car was getting my PC as decked out as possible with top-of-the-line as I could get for the time. I've got 64gb of ram thankfully, so I'm future-proof for a while there, and I'm hoping that my 3090ti will get me another 2-3 years ok.

>I have a small white penis

>>728969147
it literally is, look up what an LLM is my retarded little naive friend. Stop buying into what the media tells you about what is and isn't AI: even the negative shit acts as an advertisement for them.

Here, for you:
https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_language_model
>LLMs work by finding patterns in language. They learn grammar, facts, and how words relate to each other by looking at billions of examples. The most powerful LLMs use a special design called "transformer," which helps them process large amounts of text quickly.[2]

This is what you call "intelligence". It's no more intelligent than the sentence autocomplete on your phone, it's just a bit more sophisticated.
