I kept hearing people lament that BoF 6 got cancelled so I decided to give the first game a try to see what I was missing and I really tried my best to enjoy it but I just can't:
>disgustingly high random encounter rate
>slow as molasses traversal speed
>basic dialogue
>combat as deep as a puddle
Are the latter games better or is this series just not for me?

2 is passable. 3 is great. 4 is good but not as good.

All the people that cope about breath of fire are coping about 3 which has AMAZING pixel art and a very good OST
The first 2 games are pretty lame, 2 is so bad someone released a patch that improves the game with a better translation and a few QOL options such as a dash button

>expecting more out of an early '90s JRPG
have you not played many old JRPGs?
you might as well be complaining about Dragon Quest 1, all your points apply to it just as easily as it applies to all late '80s early '90s console JRPGs.
but the answer to your question is yes.
usually 2 or 3 is called the best, i think it just really comes down to whichever you play first.
4 is passable.
5 is a completely different game.
6 wasn't "cancelled," we just don't talk about it.
