Am I retarded or is gyro on Dualshock 4 a useless gimmick? I've tried to test it with some racing game on Steam and besides being a pain in the ass to configure it feels clunky with some annoying problems like losing calibration eventually.
I don't know if I'm missing something or if I should give up.
>>
Gyro itself is a gimmick no matter what the cultists say
>>
>>728953201
DS4 does not have gyro
gyno at best
>>
>>728953201
Gyro in general is a useless gimmick. I suppose you can use it for emulating tendie gimmicks but trying to map it like a racing wheel or aiming in an fps is a bad idea
>>
>>728953201
It's nice in games designed to use it properly but those are rare because Xbox controllers don't have gyro so most multiplat games don't use it as a core mechanic. That just leaves tendie and snoy exclusives, so in stuff like Nioh it's nice to use gyro when you're using a bow or gun.

>I've tried to test it with some racing game on Steam

why a racing game? this shit is almost made FOR shooters, or maybe some menu heavy games, here are some of my configs that heavily use gyro:

Team Fortress 2
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3624233894
Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3616880448
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3603571607
Thief Gold
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3603606392
Mount & Blade: Warband
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3596980125

here what ive learned wasting my time making so many controller configs:

you often need both a toggle button for the gyro and a SUPRESS button for the gyro, just like when you run out of desk for your mouse and have the lift the thing up, with a gyro you might want to supress gyro for a second while you reorient your controller to a neutral position, without having to toggle the gyro off entirely

the steam deck makes this super easy, cuz the sticks have capacitors that detect when they are being touched, so you can configure gyro to ONLY activate while you touch the stick

for the dualshock you can do something similar, but the opposite, once gyro is toggle on, have it always enabled UNLESS you touch the right touchpad, it makes repositioning very easy
>>
Sony have been struggling with controllers since the original dualshock.
All they know how to do is add more shit that no one really wants, like the touch pad.
>>
>>728953764
Even the touchpad is more useful than the meme light.
>>
>>728953932
oh one hand, yes, the touchpad is a million times better than the light in terms of usefulness

on the other, i made a Metal Gear Rising config that makes the controller glow red any time you activate Ripper mode, and thats cool

i actually enjoy the touchpad a lot for PC games, Sony may not know how to use it, but i do
>>
>>728954108
It's funny how much better the steam and ds4windows config is than the actual consoles are
>>
>>728954210
no joke, im finding so many uses for he gyro and the touchpad is incredible Sony never did
>>
>>728953201
Gyro is necessary for giving you the vast amount of fine/gross motor control you lose when using a handheld controller, which by necessity does not use any motion other than finger motion.
It also doesn't need your fingers to be used.
This makes it great for any console game that mistakenly uses free camera instead of a fixed camera or a more well-designed camera system that mostly handles itself without needing player input most of the time.
>>728953764
Honestly their biggest problem is that they're probably torn in multiple different directions inside the company, so they can only make the compromises that no one is happy with or are stuck trading favors and other office politics shit.
The PS5 for instance should have just ditched designing a new flat controller and made the default controller something suited for VR, while relying on the perfectly fine DS4 for flat games, but instead they wasted their effort and we got a bad set of flat and VR controllers.
>>
>>728953201
The only actually good use of gyro I've ever seen is for pitch control in Wipeout HD
>>
>>728953407
Its for vr
>>
>>728953201
It was clutch for those damn BOTW shrines, don't really use it otherwise

have you ever used gyro? do you ACTUALLY prefer aiming with the fucking sticks?
>>
>>728954210

Official development usually needs to hit the lowest common denominator (xbox), which has no useful features, and even if that wasn't the case, there is a limit to how much innovation can occur if iterations are limited to new games within a console's lifespan. The Wii also had this problem of no one knowing how to use it and learning the wrong lessons constantly.
Custom player configs can be made in minutes, shared and iterated upon until the best ones win out.
>>
>>728954627
I prefer using a mouse like a normal person. If it's a console game then it has a lock on system to make sticks comfortable. Gyro aiming is the worst of both worlds from my experience

Quite literally the only reason why it hasn't been "normal" was Microcock kneecapping this shit back in 2005 when the rest of the industry wanted it as a standard feature.
We'd quite literally be 20 years into it being normal if they spent the literal pennies it'd be per controller to include gyro back then.
>>
>>728954514
Flick stick gyro is objectively the best FPS aiming, beating out mouse and keyboard by a mile.

>If Dinput had just been accepted as good enough and we hadn't needed to waste time with terrible Xinput wrappers and "this game plays best with a 360 controller" nonsense we would all be playing with flightsticks, throttles and arcade controllers
>>
>>728955290
if that's true why haven't I seen a single esports player use it?
>>
>>728955369
Notice how I was talking about standard controllers not specialized ones you troglodyte.
>>
>>728953201
Used gyro in 1 game ever - folklore. Its always been stupid.
>>
>>728953201
Sonygroes don't care, so Sony never bothered making it good or even using it in the first place. Gyro aiming would've been nice to have in Horizon.
>>
>>728955290
If it's so good, how come not even PlayStation-exclusive shooters offer it as an option?
>>
>>728954108
Sounds cool but you never look at your controller whilst playing so what's the point?
>>
>>728957086
Because it's nonstandard you dumbass.
Same reason despite having the USB slots for it, drivers for it, and it being exposed to use in games, mouse and keyboard support for shooters didn't start being a thing until this generation.
>>
>>728953201
It's not completely useless it's great for getting you killed in bloodborne because for whatever reason from decided to have gryo control the uncancelable gestures that will activate at random because you scratched your nose and the ps4 thought you were using the gryo to emote.
>>
>>728953201
Getting it perfect on Steam or PC in general is impossible and getting it acceptable is a chore.
Something to consider, the most popular gyro game, Splatoon, has all automatic or hold+release ranges weapons, and the only "semi-auto" weapons are close range melee weapons. Not to mention the enormous hitboxes compared to most shooters. No doubt Nintendo experimented with semi-automatic weapons, but realized how much spamming a button throws the aim off so they specifically designed the weapons around gyro.
Metroid Prime series features IR and gyro across its games, but the hitboxes are also huge. If precise aiming or headshots were actually necessary, it wouldn't work. This is why Trilogy has A as shoot instead of the more obvious trigger-like B button, because it's just a little less shitty.
No amount of software dampening will fix this either. The actual aiming aspect of gyro on a controller is superior to sticks, but it all shits the bed when it's time to actually shoot.

Both of these work fine for me. Raw mouse input feels just as good as games that support native gyro. I use it for all shooters even when a mouse would have been the better choice. It may not be as good as a mouse, but they difference isn't significant and I think it is worth it for the better feel of playing with a controller. I'm no pro and I'm not trying to be, but it does work fine for the average player.

>Splatoon, has all automatic or hold+release ranges weapons, and the only "semi-auto" weapons are close range melee weapons.
This is true, but I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing. Holding the controller steady is something that you can learn to improve on. Things that make a game more difficult, but are still intuitive and skill based are different from things that make a game more difficult because of a hardware limitation.
>>
They should ban stick and force everyone to use gyro
>>
>>728954785
>I prefer using a mouse like a normal person.

do you use a mouse while laying on the couch? i dont

>If it's a console game then it has a lock on system to make sticks comfortable.

it really isnt, even with autoaim

but most important of all, gyro makes previously PC exclusive perfectly playable on a controller, hell it makes some games made with controllers in mind, more comfortable, games like monster hunter or dark souls arent shooters, but sometimes you have to aim in em, that is made easier with gyro

actually you do notice because the fucking thing lights up like a star for some reason, i have no clue why Sony made the LED so noticeable

but its ok, its just a little gimmick i added to my controller config, the config initially only added gyro controls for item aiming and an "automash" function for certain QTE, cuz i dont want to wear down my sticks every time i get grabbed

then i saw steam input allows you to change the color of the LED and i decided to have some fun with it

think of it like the silly little noises that came out of the wiimote back in the day, it adds nothing to the experience, but its kinda cool

if any of you guys are interested in checking it out, open steam input for Metal Gear Rising, go to the community layouts tab and search for the one called:

>Gamepad with Gyro... and the controller glows red in Ripper Mode
>>
>>728953201
Archer in Dragons Dogma 2 is a lot of fun with gyro toggle.

pro-tip, map weapon attacks to R1 instead of R2 and its giantic trigger pull, now you can fire semi auto to your hearts content with minimal effects on your aim

man i feel like a guru with all the stupid knowledge ive accumulated on Steam Input and Gyro

Gyro is for Wii zoomers who grew up waggling their arms like faggots.
>>
>>728953201
gyro on controllers is for aiming, not racing
>>
>>728963610
Technically when you drive you use the wheel to aim to a general direction.
>>
I fell for the gyro aiming meme and spent so much time fiddling with it and it still sucks. it's better to get a chair with a nice arm rest so I can recline and use my mouse, even tho I hate using mouse
