In FF3, the Cloud of Darkness appears to return the worlds of Light and Dark back to the Void from whence they came. From what I've seen of FF14, there was a world that had a literal flood of light that more or less erases parts of the world while the denizens turn into monsters.

If you aren't familiar with Final Fantasy, then the idea that Xehanort has a point (even if his idea of following on that point is still very bad in terms of the damage it causes) isn't really something that is demonstrated so far, especially when - again - his actual motive is kept to the reports. Then again, maybe the saga that KH starts will touch on it.
