Don't tell me you actually do this
>>728960776I do this in TES games but with a jrpg like Etrian Odyssey you might as well just write a book since you'll be doing 90% of the work
I wish I was autistic enough to do this. I remember when I was younger I could read books, stop for a second after a certain part, close my eyes and fully imagine in my head everything that I read. My imagination and youtful wonder is gone

>>728961063First post best post.I'm going to make a game that generates a single image and tells the user to use their imagination to "play" it.
>>728960776As a teenager, whenever I beat a Dark Souls boss I imagined what it would be like to rape them after defeating them. Yes, even Sif.
>>728960776I do it, but I won't do it if the developer is specifically telling me to do it. Fuck off, you're the story teller, tell your fucking story and don't ask me to fill in the places you were too lazy to write characters.

>>728962047based but also cringe
>>728960776This is the kind of autistic retard who thinks that roleplaying in a video game is pretending to be a town guard in Oblivion.
>>728960776i do this all the time playing Mount and Blade, especially fantasy overhaul mods. it makes me feel very immersive to feel the loss of elite troops in bloodbath you didn't choose to fight because marshal is an idiot or you must stand your ground alone while calling for support from your faction that never came, prompting you to lose faith in faction and rebel etc.
>>728967097I did that and it was fun
>>728966083>>>/tg/
>>728960776I do this all the time but it's exhausting and kinda pointless in grind-heavy games like jrpgs. There are better genres out there for this kind of thing and imo the more story there is to work with, the better. Soulslikes and CRPGs that let you make up a guy are the easiest to work with ime.
>>728962047How do I acquire such power? Also what app?
>>728960776in Grandia, after almost every story beat, all the NPCs have new dialogue, that was funthen you get excited to finding an inn to stay, because you can choose to have a meal, and run through the dialogue with your party
>>728960776>A landsknecht who uses an axe might eat his meat with his bare hands and no utensils, but one who wields a sword might prefer a knife and fork at dinner.

>>728960776Wait, you don't LARP as a nobody-commander who emerges from the conflict out of nowhere and being central decisive factor in winning the war against the evils?
>>728960776You're telling me you can choose whether you do this? For me it just depends on how good the game is. Games communicate details about the world, story, and characters through the feel of their gameplay. When the gameplay grips me, questions like this flow naturally, and are answered as I play.
I miss being a child able to enter the world of video games
>>728962047This is peak please tell me how you got started with this.

>>728961579chicken or egg?this guy's fantasies or black souls?
>>728969328the point of a role playing game game is you are playing the role of a character you created, which is why jrpgs aren't rpgs
>>728960776of course I do, that's the main draw of the Niggas Exploring a Cave genre
>>728960776I do.What will you do now that I have told you this retardation?
>>728961295Just like any muscle, exercise is required to maintain strength.
>>728960776This is retarded. The only games that I actually do some imaginary roleplay with is TES and a few CRPGs that allow for immersion. JRPGs are just games, I have fun dungeon crawling in Etrian Odyssey but I don’t see it as anything other than a fun game, not some experience I can immerse myself in
>>728960776My EO3 characters were all based on Roman historical/mythological figures to match the theme of that game. The farming team was from the Cambridge Latin course.
>>728961063>I do this in TES gamesI love TES, weird how despite of laying the world around you they still force the player to use their imagination. Also fuck you EO is great

>>728972180Using your imagination is extremely healthy
>>728960776Recently picked up and played the first Etrian Odyssey game. I usually headcannon stuff in games, but I think EO lends itself well to doing this because of how simple it is. I started the second game and was able to keep my save data, so my guild has moved on to the new region. Some members retired, some left for personal reasons, others stayed. Its nice that the game lets you have some renown if you choose to. Very happy that the new game has enough classes from the jump to let me have an A team and a B team, although EO2 feels very different.

>>728960776Lame excuse for lazy game design. You might as well never evolve beyond text adventures because players can just imagine the visuals and gameplay.
>>728978004By that logic, every game that doesn't fill the runtime with pages of text is lazy design.
>>728978091The upper limit is debatable, but when there's literally zero lore or context, it's indisputably lazy.
>>728978170But the games do have lore. It's just your party that's blank slates.
>>728978218That's the lazy part. Don't excuse your lack of roleplaying with "just imagine it bro." How about I just imagine a video game instead of buying yours.
>>728978256What are they supposed to do? Give you a premade party? Nexus did that and that got people to whine a lot? Make personality some kinda stat?
>>728978170But the game shown in the OP has lore and context...
>>728978256don't blow a gasket, aphantasia-anon.
>>728978359It can be a stat, or dialogue, or character branching stories, as long as it involves gameplay somehow. Otherwise it's just copium.

I’m 30 years old and i make my own stories in my head when I sleep. Right now I have a story about a captain of a kings army who has to navigate politics and helping the royal family, while also helping the “hero” of the story.
>>728960776But I do indeed do that.
>>728978590>the characters don't have any personality unless they talk and the talking has to be beholden to gameplay in a traditional branching story formatWhat the fuck?
>>728961295I'd wager it's stress that keeps it away from you.>>728978685Based. Isn't it great to be able to entertain yourself like that?>Muh escapism badYour imagination was with you as soon as your brain developed enough to have it, and your imagination will be with you to the very end. I cherish it more than gold.
>>728978791Yes, they don't have any personality if you have to imagine it. If you have to imagine things then you might as well imagine playing a game in the first place instead of actually playing it.
>>728961295>I remember when I was younger I could read books, stop for a second after a certain part, close my eyes and fully imagine in my head everything that I read. My imagination and youtful wonder is goneIt never left, you just fried your brain by being on your pc/phone all day consuming slop non-stop.Your ability to "imagine" is something that will obviously deteriorate if you keep drowning your head with useless shit. If you truly wanted to you could easily train your brain to get that kind of imagination again, it requires to stop staring at a screen 24/7 so most here won't be able to though.
>>728978893Their personality is a function of their appearance and how they feel in gameplay.
>>728978945That's a projection of personality, so literally imagination.
>>728978986Let's use an analogy. If an FPS gives me a "desert eagle" with weak sound design and bad stopping power for its size, it is a bad desert eagle. The way it feels to use it doesn't match what it's meant to be.Thus, the "character" of a desert eagle in a game comes from its gameplay utility as well as its appearance and any writing associated with it. Not solely the appearance and writing. The same applies to literally everything within a game.
>>728979265That's okay, you can just imagine that it's a characteristic desert eagle. That's what these devs would want you to do instead of taking the effort to design it in a way that doesn't force you to imagine.
>>728979459>force you to imagineCan you not just do it automatically?
>>728960776I can't do it, not for JRPGs, like pokemon. With some games like pathfinder the text might say something happens and yet the chracters stand afk doing nothing which also breaks my immersion. If I'm going to read actions you might as well black out the screen and only show text which it sometimes does.
>>728979554Can't you? What does it matter if it's a "bad" deagle? Don't you just automatically imagine that it sounds and feels right? How would you feel if you didn't have breakfast this morning?
>>728979615i didnt have breakfast this morning
>>728960776With every single Etrian Odyssey game, and you have no idea how long it took me to give each one of my characters names.
>>728979771Off top
>>728979615I'm gonna be real, you are getting steamed over a Japanese wizardry clone. It doesn't give the party any identity beyond a sprite and the stats you give them because that's how the DOS games did it, customization, and they were DS games. Is it such a sin that they pulled a "hey you can fill in the blanks"?
>>728979986I just said that it's lazy and that excusing it with "use your imagination" is lame. I'll just imagine I'm playing a better RPG.
>>728980194There's a difference between laziness and cutting the fat. Let's be honest with ourselves. Writing is completely unnecessary when it comes to video games. EO is better because you have to imagine it.
>>728980470So let's just do text adventures, I'll imagine better gameplay and visuals than anything these devs could make.
>>728980470I'll go to bat for EO but not that far dude, jeez. You're allowed to like having minimal writing but it's not the only way to make a game.
>>728980632If you really feel like imagining small details about a character based on how they behave in gameplay is on the exact same level as making up the gameplay in your head, I think you don't understand how imagination or engagement with fiction works.
>>728967207BASED, annon.i make and an RP and plot about a skilled orphan human ranger with an adventure to find his origin parentage (who is legendary ranger father in-game faction : Kregan County) that left protag at a village bordering vampire's territory who grew up to be a servant of vampire house, then rose through military rank within vampire house as mere human man and find forbidden love with vampire princess whose personality is to live an adventurous life and wish to travel with you in a quest to find your past. RPG is only fun if you let yourself drown in your own thoughts and story that you wish to play with.
>>728980642I only got to that point because the other guy had the opposite opinion. You know that thing where the more you're told you're wrong, you feel more right. It's that.
>>728980789I can imagine as much or as little gameplay as I want. Therefore the devs don't need to add it, my ideal vision will surpass anything they put out. Same as roleplaying. Why add anything to games when we can just imagine it?
>>728980852based autist
>>728960776Ofcourse I do this. My Nexus playthrough I decided to make the survivalist (Cod) the cocky older brother trying to be a father figure. A glasses gunner (Remora) who is team mom but also often the butt of jokes. The stern old War Magus (Pike) raised both of them but now acts as the team grandpa. And then the abrasive Ronin (Sawara) and shy Ninja (Sayori) were the young twins, they're real troublemakers, but in the final battle they ended up being the ones who saved the world.Together, they are the Dead Fish Family.
>>728961295God, I basically canibalized my capability to enjoy music on its own terms in order to use it as inspiration of my imagination.I still think it was worth it but I wish i didn't have to do that.
>>728961063That is pretty gay, Anon. It might actually be worse with TES.
>>728960776I do in fact do this with EO and Wizardry. I do every time I replay Dragon Quest III as well, using each characters personality and class to roleplay how they talk, think, act, and react in my head. It's part of why I generally prefer RPGs where you make a party to ones where you don't, although those are still great too.
>>728979808What were the names you gave your last EO party? For me they were Hideto, Rosanna, Aoi, Lars, and Yngwie.

>>728991879You're better off looking into screenshot LPs/AARs for this kind of thing. Easiest to find ones are LParchive filtered by narrative tags. X-com, LobCorp and Animal crossing are some that come to mind. It's basically mixing fan-fiction into an actual run of a game, which is difficult to do properly and is becoming ever more rare by the year given the effort involved.
>>728961419I am vaxed2maxx, drink the unfiltered tap water straight from the hose, and eat frozen dinners or fast food for fully 75% of my meals, and my autistic imagination is such that I sometimes try to mimic eating in games to times I'm eating in real life. I remember first doing this at 11 or 12 years old, playing The Simpsons: Hit and Run. I drove to the Krusty Burger in-game and asked my grandma if we could go to A&W to get burgers, and we did. I ate it on the couch while sitting in the drive-thru in-game, and it was the most satisfying burger I ever ate.So yeah, either the flouride and vaxxes made give you the autistic superimagination, or my autism smashed through their obstruction like an icebreaker.
>>728991836what do you mean AI slop? You know you can draw shit yourself, right? It's not even hard. Blender is open source. Libresprite, GIMP, Paint.NET, Notepad++ are all open source.I don't need an AI to write or adjust a simple line of code in .lua script that interacts with the game's API and makes modding easier than ever. Factorio is a good example of that. The Elder Scrolls traditionally give you the SDK enviroment to mod them. So does the Witcher series.Mount and Blade is written in python and though some parts are hard coded, you can easily unpack the scripts and easily modify them. All of the items in the game, for example, are just an array of data in a text file. Not hard to change.Picrel is a texture I have created myself in 3 minutes for a blocky voxel game mods, such as Minecraft, Luanti, etc.TL;DR: AI my ass, retard.

I think imagining involvement and a story really helps. It is one of the main benefits of the blank slate character. It is the major downside of systems like Fallout 4 where the 'blank slate character' is two characters who, depending on your stat choices, may make no sense.

In every game that features a nameable silent protagonist I imagine it's always he's the same guy being stuck in an endless cycle of reincarnation. This started when I played SMT2 and gave the MC the same name as in SMT1. So then I kept using that name and kept continuing this meta story in my head that after the credits roll the main character always ends up dead and then has a new life in the next game I play. And he's never sure if his purpose is to save the worlds he visits or if that's just the backdrop to his neverending torture.
>>729006823In SMT that might actually be lore supported.
>>729006553The game provides the system (stats, encounters, dungeon layouts etc), you use your imagination for the rest. Not hard to understand.
Also whenever there's romance in a game I always imagine him getting especially sad. As he knows that no matter how much he loves someone, the love will ultimately fade as he drifts into the next world and loses most of his memories. Eventually only the pain of having lost another love remains with him being unable to even recall her face.

My first Darkest Dungeon playthrough I had a Vestal with the Nymphomaniac trait that I kept for lulz until I fucked up the bandit lord event and had to abandon it. She was randomly selected to be the one left behind and "killed" but since she was a nympho I ended up picturing her offering her body to the bandits. This imaginary scenario was reinforced when I later got a random event where a couple of heroes come back from the dead, and she was one of them. They return with all gear and upgrades missing so once again I imagined her coming back naked and used. I didn't intend for that sort of intrusive thought to come while playing DD, wasn't even using mods, but that's how it went.
