That's the one blemish ME1 has and it's not because of the Mako, it's because the side missions are the same thing over and over again but with a different planet + new skybox. If you only did like 30-40% of the side missions and then beat the main quest you'll have finished a very satisfying game.From what I understand though, ME1's development was practically bankrupting Bioware at the time, so they just couldn't flesh out every single aspect of the game to the fullest it could have been (which is what makes ME2 even more tragic since they decided to scale down the scope of their game rather then improve upon it).
