What the fuck is Todd's problem?>“Todd’s rule was always, ‘Humor has no place in games.’ That’s Todd’s rule. So of course that became, ‘Humor has no place in games if Todd doesn’t catch it.’ And that’s where things like The Lusty Argonian Maid came in.”
>>728976247Yeah man, millenialifying TES to be like Borderlands would've made it so much better
>>728976247But that’s based. If the entire game was filled with goofy 2000’s video game humor it would have sucked. TES takes itself mostly seriously and I do in turn. Now there are a few exceptions like the guy standing up to his waist in water asking if you can get him some pants. But for the most part the world is serious and believable
>>728976247That's why Skyrim has infinite replayability
Todd saw that many RPGs were ruined by humour being wedged in by writers. Just look at Fallout 2.
>>728976247Kinda based, humor is really hard to do in games and usually dates it.
>>728976247Common Todd W All humoured vidya will always end up in reddit millenisoi post-whedon marvelquip situation like b*rd*rl*nds and st*nl*y p*r*ble, I mean you can even see a franchise transformation like how dragon age went from actual dark fantasy in origins to reddit sim with veilguard, happened as well in divinity franchise with original sin 1 after having serious divine divinity/beyond divinity narrative
>>728976247If that's genuinely what he believes then why was Oblivion so goofy and retarded
>>728976838It was unintentional soul
>>728976838Its the engine that makes oblivion goofy and retarded, not the writing or by design
>>728976247>proceeds to make a joke 5 seconds after leaving the first town
>>728976838>why was Oblivion so goofy and retardedDogshit art direction and atrocious engine cobbled together with hopes and dreams.
>>728976940>not the writingDid you even play the game?
>>728977078Nothing I'd like to talk about.
>>728976838It was an insanely ambitious game made using cutting edge tech (for the early 00’s) so there are some unintentionally goofy moments with NPCs
>>728976247>>728976838It has to do more with sincerity than with humor. There is a difference between a funny in-universe joke or whatever, and the series not taking itself seriously at all. Meta jokes and constant humor basically kill any sincerity in a setting and make it impossible for people to buy into the setting. It's ironically one of the biggest issues with Bethesda's Fallout games, and why New Vegas is so different in tone from 3 and 4. New Vegas has humor, but it's still sincere and mostly stays away from meta jokes unless you turn on an optional mode. 3 and 4 are filled with that kind of humor and it's instantly immersion killing and feels cheap.
>>728977078Lemme guess, you're alluding to that one quest with schizo elf who said that someone is spying on him, thinking that it was some kind of comedical stuff evendoe you seen it from current irony point of view?
>>728976247Your first thought when seeing a claim online should be "Is this true?". As kids we were told not to believe everything we read. When it comes to journalism, we should've graduated to believe nothing we read. Assume fake until proven gay.Headline screencaps should be bannable and OP is a fag. Merry Christmas.
>>728977232No, the entire tonal direction of the game is explicitly silly. It's the only game in the series like it.
>>728977323>optional mode?you can turn on funny mode in NV?
>>728977232No. Tons of "goofy" things in Oblivion are so explicitly and unambiguously intentional that they leave no room for interpretation.>>728977339Not even. Play the fucking game.
>>728976247look the golden rule in situations like this (production) is playing it straight, being sincere in a performancemorrowind worked because it took itself seriously, and the humor in Morrowind is derived from the world itself not as some le meta critique 4th wall breakscroll of icarian flight for example is hilarious but because it's believable and true, the boots of blinding speed work within the world's rules this is what makes writing like Rick and Morty so insufferable, they can admit that they're using common tropes or themes but have to do it through a lens of self-referential irony i dont know maybe i'm just unc status fr fr
>>728977674i think he meant the "weird wasteland" trait or something like that
>>728976247quote from same guy>"violence is funny"
>>728976247This is not true on many levels, but I'll give the most important part. The Lusty Argonian maid was written as a prop in a questline where Crassius Curio sexually assaults the player. Its current hilarious meme status only came about when it got scattered across Cyrodiil and Skyrim. It still contains humor obviously, so it technically fulfills the false premise that Todd didn't want any humor, but that's a blatant retcon that makes the speaker deeply untrustworthy on the topic.
He's right though. Why should the player take the game seriously if the creators don't?
>>728977804>the humor in Morrowind is derived from the world itself not as some le meta critique 4th wall breakRight. Compare that to the "humor" in later TES games which relied on callbacks and 4th wall breaks. Oblivion had that insufferably forced "St. Jiub" gag and Skyrim's Dragonborn expansion literally just threw in a random falling mage removed from any context.
>>728976741Dragon Age was never dark fantasy lmao hahahaha
>>728978364It's very safe dark fantasy but it's a very blatant 'inspired by Song of Ice and Fire' thing. At any rate, I understand that guy's point.
>>728976247>Yeah man, millenialifying TES to be like Borderlands would've made it so much betterhe's right thovideogames are games they're fun by natureyou can only insist upon that
>>728976426>>728976650>>728976741>>728978509Todd literally doesn't even follow what the article claims he does. He's a creatively bankrupt hack, don't let this article fool you into thinking he has any actual principles.
>humor has no place gameswell that went out the window with starfield
>>728978364It was definitely a lot edgier when it started vs where it went.
>>728978743You’re a retard
>Your journey is an adventure. You don’t just decide “I wanna be across the world”. It should be an adventure, we should take advantage of it, y’know, getting somewhere. Finding a dungeon travelling up in the mountains, battling away through stuff. Roadside adventures are cool. Finding a guy on the side on the road, like “Have you seen my wagon?” That’s cool, we’re missing this opportunity by just having fast travel.
>>728976247humor is best left to the players. trying to be funny can backfire
>if you ever, ever, ever laugh at any point in a story, it's dogshit millenialslopYou're a real stupid guy, you know that?
>>728979058>being this anally buttmadTruly pathetic shit, honestly might as well kill yourself at this point
Hard mode: Name a game better than Skyrim that is also funny.Dante Must Die mode: Name a truly great game that is also funny.
>>728979097>we’re missing this opportunity by just having fast travel.then why did he push for fast travel so hard? it's like he knows why his games suck and yet he can't help himself, he NEEDS to appease lowest common denominator normalfags
>>728979351Morrowind
>>728979351>Name a game better than Skyrim that is also funnyMost games that are funny.
>ex Beth dev who seemingly respects Todd says he only agreed with about 65% of todd's decisions
>fixes problem in one game>reverts it in next
>>728976247I agree with Toddles to the extent people who aren't funny should try to write comedy. Therefore, video games should never try to be funny.
>>728976247he kept the colovian fur hat so that's just another lie
>>728976741The first Borderlands had a nice balance of humour and playing it straight, and they hadn't yet hired all the faggot writers that came on board for BL2.
