Probably not often, does anyone have any more examples? I'll throw in Rockstar's The Warriors, as it really fleshed out the gangs, the world, really captured the atmosphere. The core movie's plot is in the game, but on top of that there's also the days before the movie take place and the optional side missions that explain how each of the main nine joined the gang. It all really sets the tone of everything. Just took everything good about the movie and really ran with it.
