Yea, the game is good. It restored my faith in indie metroidvanias since majority of them fucking suck. Although, silksong is alright. It's no nine sols, but good enough.

get back to it, can't win if you don't try
>>
>>728984558
I loved this game that it made me want to try out other games with an emphasis on parrying like MGR, Expedition 33 and Sekiro. I was pleased with Sekiro's parrying system with regards to its posture mechanic and made me appreciate that NS still did its own unique spin.

In Sekiro posture is lost on your part whenever you try to block or parry an attack, but as long as you keep precisely parrying attacks you won't be broken out of your posture (being broken out of posture makes you vulnerable to an attack for a second) Meanwhile perfectly parrying attacks makes the enemy lose posture when they attack, and when they lose all of their posture thats when they're vulnerable to a deathblow.

Meanwhile Nine Sols has parrying and imperfect parries be tied to your health. You gain internal damage when you imperfect parry, which means missing a parry or not hitting precise parries is potentially more punishing. But parrying also rewards you with tailsman charges or can power up your melee attacks with certain jades.

I quite like how both games deal with mitigating imprecise parries like how you can quickly regain posture by holding guard while not being attacked or using certain arts in Sekiro or attacking or getting perfect parries to recover internal damage in Nine Sols.

And I like how both games did special attacks you need to either dodge or use a special counter to spice up the parrying, though admitively I do think Sekiro wins it out and Nine Sols could use a bit more variety in the special counters.

All in all I like both of these games did parrying and how they do things in interesting different ways.

I am not a fan at all over the death penalty punishment for either of these games, ESPECIALLY with Sekiro.
>>
Eigong is a fun boss but I personally like Lady Ethereal and Jiequan's more. It's criminal that Jiequan didn't get a third phase.
>>
>>728986169
Ironically I did use a parry build that I stumbled onto on my lonesome but my old man hands (I'm 30) couldn't keep it up.
>>
>>728986354
It's kind of funny how NS just reversed the counter attacks of Sekiro. Where instead of using a special parry for thrusts you have to jump over them and the equivalent of "sweep" attacks need a special parry. I actually prefer Sekiro's style of death penalty since the revival system gives you a chance to back out of dangerous situation instead of always having the risk of losing everything.

>>
>>728986368
True Eigong is unmatched, but Lady E and Jiequan are the second and third best bosses in the game, in that order. These were the only 3 bosses in the game who I thought were fun enough to beat hitless.

Honestly I wish Nine Sols had an expansion of revamped bosses like how HK did with its expansions. Like imagine not just Jiequan phase 3, but also Lady Ethereal phase 4 but now you have to check the extra clones as well, or Fuxi and Nuwa, but Fuxi is in his normal form before becoming mutated.

I don't know which is stronger for melee attacks, the Qi Blade Jade (powers up third melee strike in melee combos at the cost of 2 Qi charges) or the Focus Jade (powers up the charge attack and range at the cost of 1 Qi) but after really getting used to habitually charging attacks, I took the charge attack pill and never looked back. Like it feels more rewarding to get in a really strong attack after parrying enemies.

Meanwhile I never really got to using the charge attack in either of the HK games. Probably because both of the games reward the player with more soul/silk for each attack you hit, meaning you gain more of that by just simply attacking. Or certain builds making rapid attacks just better, (Quick slash charm or wanderer crest)

I picked it up after I dropped it for a year and made it to the last boss, fight seems insanely bullshit. It took me like 2 hours of attempts to beat the twins I can only imagine this one is exponentially worse
>>
>>728988140
Why have so many people adopted this mindset for bosses? A boss isn't just an obstacle to your progression; it's a duel between you and an opponent. The fun comes from figuring out their moves and timings and learning how best to respond to them, as well as finding opportunities to throw out your own moves. Any death is always your fault, because there was always something you could've done differently to mitigate damage, but it's also a learning experience since you can apply the knowledge you've gained from one attempt to your subsequent ones.
>>
>>728988140
It's pretty punishing if you haven't gotten used to certain mechanics. Especially unbounded counter.

Eigong is a test of will and while she's an absolute monster, it's no hyperbole to say she's maybe the single best boss fight I've ever beaten. Sure, I got frustrated. Sure, I put the game down for over a week and was damn near turning the difficulty down. But understanding that fight and learning how to actually play the game is one of the single most rewarding experiences I've had in two decades of gaming.
>>
>>728988852
To be fair dying and figuring out attack patterns is how a lot of hard games with their boss fights are like, though I do suppose games can try and convey the learning curve differently.
>>
>>728988812
If there is a sequel to nine sols (which seems likely to me >>728985185) I think they would have to make it a prequel. I was thinking that playing as Ji would be a good option, but the video I linked seems to imply that it would be a direct sequel. I might just not understand how Red Candle does their ARGs though since I never saw any of their previous ones.

>>
>>728988762
I don't get the hate for gauntlets, either. Gauntlets put you in a series of tense situations and challenge you to overcome them. Juggling several enemies around and bouncing between them with pogos and clawline is fun, even if it's not as novel or focused as fighting a boss. I beat the High Halls gauntlet with no tools or nail upgrades (voluntarily) on my first attempt. It only gave me trouble during my speedrun playthrough, where I had fewer tool slots, masks, and spool upgrades, but my frustration wasn't directed at the game or any perceived unfairness; rather, it was at my impatience during combat and the mistakes I made in each attempt.
>>
>>728988865
Funnily that's how I also beat her. I thought to myself I can never beat her, took a 2 months long break from the game, picked it up again on a whim after beating Silksong and fought her until I beat her. I pretty much fought her in the arena to a point where I unironically find Fuxi and Nuwa a harder boss than her.

What's especially funny for me is I played Sekiro after Nine Sols, and Eigong is a love letter to the final boss of that game. The result was that while it was by no means first try, it took me only an hour or two of attempts instead of being a brick wall. Isshin is also much more a culmination of Sekiro's natural combat rhythm whereas you can brute force your way through all of Nine Sols without understanding unbound counter then get skullfucked.
>>
>>728989285
Frankly, it was the spike floors and little guys doing uber contact damage that made me the most mad.
>>
>>728989706
>whereas you can brute force your way through all of Nine Sols without understanding unbound counter
Yeah I did that was me, I also never got gud at parrying until one of the later bosses, I think the twins maybe? Can't remember. Sekiro is definitely more smartly designed around forcing you to learn mechanics earlier on and building on itself in a way thats intuitive even for a scrub like me.
>>
Me, Heng's human husband, meeting her autistic older brother for the first time (he's shorter than her LOL)
>>
>>728990601
I think the game does a decent job on trying to teach you to get used to unbound counter for Jiequan. It's just that using unbound counter for Lady Ethereal's crimson attack is unironically harder than any of Eigong's crimson attacks. And then the Feng twins has a manageable crimson attack for the first phase, but the second phase it's just easier to dodge the attack due Nuwa throwing knives at you. It's not until Ji's boss fight that there's a good attack to use unbound counter for the entire fight, and then Eigong has a huge difficulty spike.

Maybe some of the mini bosses on the way can offer more opportunities to get used to unbound counter, but I don't quite remember. But once you get used to unbound counter it's really powerful and satisfying to use.

>>
I got the game yesterday from Humble Bundle, any tips?
>>
>>728993648
You are going to have to parry. This isn't a metroidvania where you can use positioning to bob and weave. You are going to get mulched if you don't parry, and parrying is also how you get ki charges for your abilities that do actual damage. Parry the damn attacks.
The game is a slow starter with a lot of frontloaded story, but that story does actually pay off so wait until you've fought a boss or two before deciding how you feel.
You're rewarded both with story and upgrades for bringing shit back to home base, do so often.

Other than that it's pretty straightforward. The map's pretty simple, there's no way to fuck up your build or screw yourself with a dialogue choice (except for a very heavily telegraphed one at the very end of the game), you run around and you hit people.

The threads are usually pretty welcoming but also spoiler-heavy given how long the game has been out so be wary.

I'm not that far into it yet, but it's just so boring
Combat is okay, if a bit stiff, but
The levels are completely uninteresting, which is really bad for a so called metroidvania
And most of the "progression" is skill tree unlocks and currency grinding, which is also bad for a metroidvania
It's like a 2D Sekiro but without the cool world to explore

>>
>>728989296
>I pretty much fought her in the arena to a point where I unironically find Fuxi and Nuwa a harder boss than her.
Honestly what I found the game super fun in the moment, in retrospect this basically highlights my issue with it: at the core it's basically a rythm game where you have to memorize enemy attack patterns, and that's basically it. The very first time you meet an enemy you're going to get skullfucked. Then you see it several more times and you will internalize the timing for the ultra precise 0.1 second good parry window, and then it becomes easy, but it's basically impossible to get it right without having had practice against that specific attack first.

I beat true Eigong, not quite no-damage but you know to even beat her you have to basically have 90%+ success rate in parrying all of her crazy attacks (unless you spam abuse dodging which is a viable strategy but it's lame and slow and tedious and I didn't do that, I beat her "properly"). Then I decided to do another playthrough for some achievements I had missed and just to experience the game again but not only did the early game enemies start scoring hits on me until I remembered the parry timings for them, but the first boss still took me like 5-6 attempts because again I kept fucking up the parries. Yeah some skills were transferrable like instinctively dropping a talisman on every good opportunity, finding even narrow windows to get some slashes in etc., but the actual attack timings are pure memorization and because I hadn't fought yingzhao in weeks it was now harder for me than true Eigong was (who I could've probably beat again back-to-back every 2-3 tries at most).

People say "oh if you beat Eigong other games will feel easy in comparison" and maybe that's true in perspective of time taken, as in once you've grinded a boss for 5 hours it feels easy if you beat one in 1 hour, but not in any sort of transferrable skills - even within the game itself, astoundingly enough.
>>
>>728999404
Exploration and backtracking are different things, although I would argue both are features of a metroidvania
Either way, it's laughable for a "metroidvania" to have incredibly boring copy paste levels

I did, he looks like a house cat because he's a solarian and all solarians are cats?

Just make a game where you are a FAT UGLY SMELLY APEMAN BASTARD and you must press X to breed the Solarians.

Not on my watch.

Okay. Have fun breeding Kuafu, the last living Solarian in existence.
>>
The final boss was overhyped, she wasn't really all that hard.
>>
>>729008556
I had enough difficulty with her where I felt like she was a good final boss, unlike Sekiro which was really straightforward and had a massive hype around it. I was so fucking disappointed.

Use charge attacks lol
>>

I wish her final attack had more variations instead of being the same every time.

She filtered me so hard, I watched the ending on youtube.

Damn, completely missed this.
But from where I'm standing this is an even lamer conclusion to her character. She really deserved a DLC fleshing her character out and giving her an attempt at Eigong's life.

Solairan females owe me sex
>>
if the sequel doesn't have some shady corporation using solarian DNA to grow solarian women in a lab I will be very disappointed

>Tao gets butthurt again and orders some mystic to wreck the whole project
>your women will probably die in agony too, one way or another
Be careful what you wish for.
