Fallout allowed you to be a mean motherfucker in a neo-Western setting, killing whoever you wanted in ridiculously gory ways. If you had the US version, you could also kill kids. Edginess was the core appeal of these games, and anyone saying otherwise is delusional. It certainly wasn't the combat. Fallout combat bears a superficial resemblance to a tactics game, but upon playing it you realise there is little or no strategy involved. Load up on chems for the difficult fights and make use of doorways and corners when you can – that's the full strategic depth of Fallout.
