zoomers are nearly 30 years old. zoomers broadly grew up with source games. even the most casual shitter grew up with garrys mod. i really just cant understand why millennials love to pretend like they have their fingers on the pulse of youth culture. there is nothing "discovered" here. my gen alpha cousin played half life 1 on his own volition. you just dont know anything

Source was way ahead of its times. Great facial animations (Vampire: The Masquerade), rocking physics (Half-life 2), later update to HL2 added the water reflections which were so cutting-edge that there was a Developer Commentary released where you just listen to these nerds sperging out about technical backend engine shit that made it possible. And that's the real difference: Valve had developers who understood how a game engine works. AAA? Doesn't. They just pay a license to use Tim's Unreal Engine. Don't know how it works, don't need to know how it works! that's why modern AAA games require a 5090 with DLSS On nowadays.

I hate the blurry, ghosting visuals so fucking much, I unironically was starting to think my vision was fucked or something until I went back to playing older shit.

Fuck all the faggots responsible for the enshittification of vidya graphics. Fuck them with rusty barbed wire covered in fire ants.

I always point to Dark Cloud 2, it was made 2 years after the first, massive complete story and amazing unique evolution weapon system, town building through past and future mechanics, literal photos and idea creation system for inventions remind you this is 2002. They had a whole fishing competition and leveling system as well as a fun unique gold system.

The game was a titan and only reason it never exploded was because it was in the before times due to the internet not existing to show why its one of the best.

The thing is that even people who were born in the late 90s (like myself) and are thus too young to have memories of the 90s despite being alive during them are drastically different from Gen Zs that were born post 9/11. We still remember VHS tapes since we were kids when they got phased for DVDs and we remember life before social media and the iPhone. Both are Gen Z, but because society changed so dramatically during our formative years, we have two mini-generations contained within it. We’re both still different from Gen Alpha though, since we’re both a little too old to have grown up with a chronic iPad addiction and thinking that Skibidi Toilet and “6-7” was peak humour.

I feel the engine is a little overrated.
>>
The physics still weren't up to part with Source/Havok but it's time to at least give credit to BOTW for at least attempting to have some physics and world interaction in it. Whether it's open world or not, weapon durability or not, cartoony or not, I don't want them to remove that from Zelda.
The problem is that while BOTW was attempting, whether purposely or not to be HL2, TOTK went full Garry's Mod. You never go full Garry's Mod unless you're seriously trying to make a literal sandbox game instead of an action/adventure.
I consider the Half-Life games more action/adventure games than FPS, and that makes me like the games more than most single player FPS, but that's a debate for another time.
>>
Half Life 2's physics were impressive for 2004 but everything about the game except for the lip sync (which modern games cannot do anymore) has aged like milk.

The explanation is much simpler. Konami ceased to make any bigger games at all. What big game they made in house after MGSV was not made in Fox Engine?
>>
>>729002980
The disappointing part is that all the problems with the Fox Engine were the sort of things that get sorted out as the engine gets developed more with each game. This is something that never happens with Unreal Engine, which will always be blurry and run like shit.
Fox Engine reminded me more of RAGE. How so many things looked like trash in GTA4 and then by RDR1, all of that was fixed, and then by RDR2 it beat most other engines in the parts that GTA4 was weakest at.
Fox Engine was a great starting point to work from.

It kills me that a game will come out where the core gameplay is designed and balanced around the idea of fully destructible environments and using physics props as weapons in unscripted ways but people will just watch footage of a can bobbing along the water for no reason and go
>technology!
like HL2 wasn't doing the physics-sim equivalent of Wii games demanding everything have a waggle control and an aim function even when they served no purpose to the gameplay. Apart from the gravity gun at the end, when did HL actually use the physics sim for anything more than novelty shit and gimmicks? It was just a "look what we can do" thing.

Per capita older games look better than modern games.
>>
>>728995412
Modern games have absolutely no attention to detail, no passion, no guy going "let's add that because it would be cool", and no intent to make quality.
They all end up being the entertainment equivalent of a mannequin waiting for a sponsor.

Half-Life 2 was just a shittier quake as far as the gameplay goes so it's actually a grim example.
I want less linearity, not scripted hallway traversal to such an extreme that a can floating in water somehow becomes impressive.

The 90s were home to some of the most basic types of racism in America. Gang violence got popular figures killed every day, people went bankrupt simply for being white, the Clinton administration pretty much ensured black families ate good while other families had to rely on work for income. Bill Clinton nutted on a Jewish brunette behind his wife's back for god sakes, race was a primal and anal motivator in the 90s.

there's about 20 layer of red tape to do something in a game because you think it'd be cool now. teams got too big and there's too many middle managers. you can't go "this is cool, let's try it" without having to wait 2 weeks to a month for the right people to sign off on it, assuming they approve it at all.

4GB RAM in 2004?? most people were still on 2GB when Crysis came out in 2007. I built my first own PC in 2004 and it featured a staggering 1 GB RAM which was more than any of my friends had in their not-old PCs. I wonder what you needed 4GB for.
the GPU is the kind of 2001 tech I was thinking of (actually February 2002 though, I just looked it up). the family PC I used prior had something like a geforce 3 Ti (?) in it. I would never have considered installing HL2 on it.

nonsense. it's common practice to represent models with simplified colliders. already was then, still is now. HL2's physics were expensive then and are a lot cheaper now but only by an order of magnitude or so. if HL2 has dozens of it you can have hundreds. if HL2 has one of it you might be able to put 10 in your game. that's about the scaling you should expect. so you can see how that would rob us of the opportunity to do anything revolutionary. polycount is nothing to do with it.

That was unexpected. I thought overall education level and knowledge reached the point where this sub50 IQ retardation wont be parroted yet here we are, with prime example that is you.

Havok is a library. Math library. It simply does PHYSICS math, it does not do PHYSCS. You have to code actual physics and interactions from scratch.
But it does not end there - Valve modified default Havok to the point you could all it Havok 2 before H2 even released

There are devs who are still like that.
None are AAA because AAA development is led by committees. It's why big companies can own IPs that are (or used to be SOVL) but the new games are just ass (eg. Final Fantasy since the merger in 2003)

TAA would be another important mention for the 2010s by the way. didn't exist before 2010. now in everything.

craftmanship in every field tends to follow a pattern when it has reached a peak with detail, finesse and being groundbreaking. There is only one way to go and that is down. One example is architecture. The most inspiring examples of architecture still held in high regard were build approx. 4500 up to 150 years ago. In between this timeline there were many periods of architecture reaching it's peak, but also completely turning into a forgettable depressing mess. In the grand scheme of things, virtual gaming is a relatively new concept. We have hit the first peak with gaming and are now spiraling down into low quality bloated forgettable coy-paste titles.

HL2 used planar reflections, meaning a whole second camera is rendering the scene again from a reflected POV, then the results are drawn on the water.

screenspace reflections work completely differently and were pioneered by Crysis 2 in 2012 (they arrived in a patch after release). another noteworthy pioneer was Killzone 4 at the PS4 launch another year or so later.
