How do other anons feel about Zelda's approach to character design? I feel like I've seen an uptick in people complaining about how ugly NPCs can be in the games, but I've always thought they're charmingly ugly in the same way a character like Wario is.

Feel free to say why you think it's shit/good/whatever.

We truly live in an unjust society.

every zelda has a different artstyle, you're going to have to specify retard

Twilight Princess was okay for character design.

Skyward Sword made people too sex. I was sure I was in love with Orielle.

Different artstyles, sure, but I always thought there was a distinct approach to how characters look in Zelda vs. other series. The clowns from TP or Tingle are a good example, I think. Sort of exaggerated proportions, caricature-like in their appearance.

Depends on the style.
Games like TWW should have a lot of oddly proportioned characters with crazy designs specifically because its so cartoony. TP has a problem where everyone looks ridiculous but its in this more realistic setting, so they all wind up being ugly. Its fine to have a few outlandish designs - like Agatha and the clowns - but not everyone should be so bizarre looking.
Though I definitely prefer TP's designs to the Switch games. Everyone is bland and nobody is particularly memorable unless they severe a specific purpose, like Hudson.
The cartoonish games should have wild character design. More realistic games should have a few weird quirky NPCs that stand out.

It's pretty clear they wanted characters to have distinct unique appearances. Exaggerated fairy tale aesthetics.

Commendable effort. They could have just reused models and swapped textures.

This is just because BotW/TotK only have a handful of hand crafted designs, with most of the NPCs coming from a character generator. It's another issue with the games being too fucking big.

Twilight princess character design is hot and miss but mostly hit
Wind Waker character design is mostly miss with the NPCs
Ocarina of Time and MM character design is great
Skyward Sword characters are ugly
BotW and TotK characters are just boring
