My first Ninja Gaiden game. The girls are hot as fuck and the game is hard. Stylish as fuck combat though.

I'm getting through it but this has got to be the worst lock on system in a while. It keeps locking on the worst possible enemy. It refuses to target the flying dudes sometimes.

there's a weird difficulty curve, it's hardest at the start then gets progressively easier

Don't rely on the lock-on in normal fights. It's only decent when fighting bosses, to keep the camera from spazzing out too much. When you unlock Kage-Higuro, which throws huge shurikens, the flying dudes become not much of a problem anymore.

Here's how the targeting works.

You don't use lock-on when in a large group of enemies.

This. I was even killing bosses on the first try but the 1st boss killed me like 10 times.

They put the hard lock on system in as a joke, because the only way to show people once and for all that it's a terrible idea for group fights was to actually give them the option and find out themselves. Trust your mobility more.
