They were going for a body-snatchers vibe with the synths but it doesn't make sense. Super mutants are back and it doesn't make any sense. At least we have New Vegas.
While NV has awful combat (just like fallout 3), I can't say the story or RPG choices are bad.They are the only good parts of the game and are way better than anything Bethesda has in any of games.

It's in universe. Obsidian did a much better job of continuing the originals because it asks questions like: What's the NCR doing now? What are the great Khans doing? What happened to Las Vegas? They did all that without trying to shoehorn in an American slavery allegory, blade runner and invasion of the body snatchers imitations. If Bethesda wanted to tell a story about human rights for machines and the philosophical quandaries of what makes a man a man, fallout was not the right outlet for that unless they had it be with new factions that were well realized. The institute could have worked if it had been better explained WHY they were manufacturing synths in a world where most people are starving and resorting to cannibalism.
