it's sad that you can see the bones of a great game that was ultimately butchered to hell by the badge system and wonder gimmick. Had Nintendo scrapped those while bringing back double/triple jump and more items from previous Mario games it might've been a worthy successor to Bros 3 and World
I could not be bothered to unlock the final final challenge but I am looking forward to the Switch 2 expansion.
>>729012417why do people care so much about the Triple Jump? it's the most useless move in the New Super Mario Bros games, one could completely forget it even exists in a normal playthrough
>>729012417I play this with my 2-year-old daughter. She isn't good enough yet to navigate the levels on her own yet, so I play as Yoshi and ferry her across levels like a loyal steed. She gets happy when we get a wonder seed and that whole song and dance plays. She also loves the bubble powerup, so I try to keep her topped up on those. She excitedly spams bubbles on my back as I run the level.
bro just wanted new soup again wholesale
>>729015147>Muh kidsNobody cares.
The wonder effects are fun visual flair but I feel like they overcorrected on the idea of, "Man the new soup games look boring" and made something that doesnt have a lot of substance. Take away the crazy visuals and most of the gimmicks are things that the new super mario bros games could easily do and not feel out of place. It's still a fun game, but due to them going so hard in on spectacle the actual levels suffer since outside of that spectacle most of them are really general mario levels that dont do that many creative things to stand out, outside of visuals. Hopefully the DLC is better, not that I plan on playing.

>>729012417>>729015554Seethe harder, snoy.
>>729012417>its sad that this game got ruined with [gimmicks I didn't like], if they had used [gimmicks I do like] it would've been betterreally, you don't say, gimmicks you like, eh? interesting....
>>729015147>ReproducingThat’s so gay.
>>729012417it's sad that you can see the bones of another stale NSMB game that was obscured by the badge system and wonder gimmick.
>>729015147Cute but still it's funny how the game's presentation appeals to literal babies, and dozens of fully grown professional reviewers describe it as "charming" and "a breath of fresh air"
>>729015373
>>729012417Wonder flowers would’ve been more fun and memorable if they weren’t so easy. They turned the second half of every level into a simple safe trip to the goal.
>>729012417What is wrong with the badge system exactly? Adds a meaningful element of customizability to your characters and an additional puzzle element sometimes. Player choice customization options are good, as are IQ checks.
>>729017258The puzzle elements are so rare I don't even remember them. The vast majority of the game is meant to be possible with any badge. This was my strategy:>pick a good badge>stick to it>beat most levels easilyI'm not OP though, I don't think it ruined the game either.
>>729012417The badge system and wonder gimmick are kino. It's just a shame the levels are dogshit easy
>>729015123>why do people care so much about the Triple Jump? Those are just N64 autists.
>>729016826none of those things are mutually exclusive
>>729017482Sometimes a badge is helpful or necessary to get extra shit in a level, but yeah not necessary to beat it.

It's not fun. It has an identity crisis where it wants to distance itself from the New Super series but doesn't have anything to offer. This is literally just>NSMBU with better graphics, worse music and every level has a quirk chungus gimmickThey need to go study Super Mario World, make more of that, or even SMB3 but most of SMB3's difficulty (which is too high for modern audiences) comes from the controls. Wonder is the snappiest 2D Mario they've ever made and that's no fun. You need air drag and friction or else the platforming is pointless. I might as well play I Wanna Be The Guy.
I liked Wonder, but it's flawed. It's clear they were actually trying with the art style, level design and world map this time around as opposed to NSMB, which fell into a stagnant rut right after Wii due to the samey artstyle (which also affected Mario spinoffs around this time much to everyone's displeasure) and strict four step level design (do *you* remember the difference between the bullet bill levels of Wii, 2 and U?). In that sense Wonder does feel like the fresh new installment the franchise needed as it felt they were actually trying new things with the aspects I mentioned before, at least some of those being inspired by Maker, which at least make it an interesting game. And while I'm a bit mixed on the Wonder Flower, as it basically replaces most setpieces levels would normally have and its inclusion makes for some weird level structure at times, I think it's an overall success for the game, though I don't think I'd want it to return. The badges are cool though, I wouldn't mind them returning. That said, the soundtrack was kinda forgettable, the bosses are not worth talking about even for 2D Mario standards and it really could've used more secret exits all through out the game rather than front-loading them.
>>729012417The badge system is a good idea on paper but most of them were badly designed and didn't have great use cases or were even fun to mess around withThe real problem in Wonder is the level design, Nintendo focused too hard on style over substance. The Wonder gimmick gets old quickly and the level design is made too overly simplistic, even NSMB Wii had more intereting level design.Secrets are pretty good in Wonder though which always stood out to me and I like playable Daisy.Yoshi and Nabbit being forced easy modes suck, there should have just been an easy mode to toggle on/off in the menu or lock it to a powerup like in 3D world
