Fast forward to the farm part, the baby is at least half a year, maybe one year old. Meaning that she'd carried and gave birth to it. That'd be, let's say 6+6 months, plus the amount of time it takes to travel from Jackson to California on foot (at least couple of months, based on the proximity and the way it takes Joel a year to cross half a country, minus the winter injury). So, at least one year passes between the theater and the beach fight.

I believe that they were going with parity with the first game - joel leaves the comfort of jackson to seek closure on his terms with tess's request but changes his mind last minute much like ellie leaving dina on the farm. The problem isn't necessarily the last minute change or that it's unexplainable in the second game, I think the writers did a really poor job using all the narrative resources available to either correctly juxtapose ellie's flashbacks or lesson's from joel's life and/or communicate them using characters in game making it seem to come from out of left field. What made joel's story so compelling was that ellie so obviously filled in what he lacked, while ellie could arguably have lacked an understanding of joel and his actions and faults and had those thoughts coalesce into a sort of sympathy for joel and abby but it's never approached by character dialog and presented seemingly incidental to the ending. To fix it, they'd have to cram a lot of dialog between ellie and either abby or an entirely new foil character at the last minute that never learned and just kept losing more of themselves.

The fact the game never actually adresses this in a story of revenge shows how purile the writing is, noone else in that universe has agency except ellie and abby, once their beef is done? The universe just stops trying to kill them. Other people wont care that youve buried the hatchet with your target, so some strangers really should show up and kill her after everything she did just like Abbys dad was killed by some random guy and Abbys life was ruined by some random girl, that would send the message that "revenge bad" and its made a cycle to of death.
