Is there a reason for romance being so dogshit in games? It seems so intentional as well
>heart emoji on the obvious flirt option
>[Character] liked/disliked that
>treating you like you've been married 20 years even though you just agreed to be lovers

How would you know whether the romance is good or bad?

Hard to follow the old saying "write what you know" when no one knows what love is like.

I was seriously asking. What are you even comparing video game romances to? They seem way deeper than any romance I write, which is basically me raping women because I think they're hot. That's the kind of romance novel I write.

"Romances" are made by autistic virgins for other autistic virgins, simple as that. Running on same idealistic themes of how society thinks romance should be about.

Fuck romances, period. Completely worthless and waste of time and resources.

I should've been more specific, AAA romances just seem so bolted on

>>729018215
I doubt they get much resources at all

The only way I would approve of romance in a video game would be if it were gamified. For example in an RPG, if you pursued romance with a companion, you could “level up” your affection level which makes you fight better against monsters when both characters are in the party. That would give you an actual reason to participate in romance beyond just the text dumps.

Cats can't be chuds or incels because women love all cats unconditionally, even if the cat is fat and eat and just sleep all day.

Romance is aimed at women, not men
>But what about male authors who write romance for men
Not even worth raising an eyebrow

They are dog shit specifically in WRPGs and CRPGs. Like games from Bioware, Larian, Owlcat, CDPR, Warhorse etc. They all follow the same dog shit formula.
>Shit combat
>Linear design
>Party format
>Boring characters
>Forced romance to cover up how shit the writing is
Unironically go and play a VN. This shit just gets in the way of gameplay in RPGs. The best WRPGs and CRPGs have shit romance or no romance options instead of it being the main focus.

Unless the game is specifically about romance, then it's always going to be half baked and stilted, because it's an element that at best compliments a character's development and at worst draws attention away from more important or practical aspects of the story and/or contextualizes how people behave such that it may border the nonsensical.

Take Deus Ex Human Revolution, for example. Megan Reed is a key character in the story, and Adam's love interest. When their facility is attacked, he vows to track down who did it and get answers (alongside revenge). His motives are tinged by the feelings he has for Reed, despite the fact that he's got enough motivation as it is to undertake this investigation without the need of a love interest, and yet it appears that she's not consumed by the same emotional ties, because she readily places her research before her personal feelings. The dynamic is there as an added element to both their characters, and in this case it works well enough because it doesn't infringe on the story all that much. However, imagine how retarded it would be if, throughout the game, the player could interact with Megan in various ways and make story related decisions based on those interactions. It'd be retarded, no doubt, because everyone knows that love is irrational, and he's supposed to be chief of security in a corporate setting, a professional who is beholden to stakes greater than himself.

In short, it only ever works as character development, in my opinion. Sex scenes are gratuitous fan service more than anything else.
