Honestly somewhat trueI looked through the PS2 library pretty thoroughly recently and JRPGs were one of, if not the most common genre. So many forgotten games, and FFX and DQVIII mogged every single one of them. It's just not even a contest.

Most of the really old jrpgs are just quite dated and annoying to play, for example ys which requires you to grind multiple times, while playing with you being somewhat clueless about where to go when it comes to doing stuff like sidequests.For example ys2 with the mines, where you're supposed to run around that shitty labyrinth and find 5 priests before Gila's basement opens. All in all most of the older games while having nice vibes are just built to be annoying to play.
