I always preffered to have two guys, the main hero and the reinforcements/picking up shit guy who then spends his time garrisoned. In the campaigns you sorta need to have a number of well developed heroes in order to not get fucked over. The difficulty can get pretty fucking insane later on.

I have such mixed feelings on 6. It tried, it really honestly tried to do something new. It's just that most of their design decisions were ultimately wrong, the game was buggy as hell, and Ubishit meddled with the online features. I liked it visually though, if only 5 could look like this.

But I don't like the moment-to-moment gameplay which is often poor or even anti-fun. I don't hate the aesthetic but it's not pleasant to look at either, ditto for music, constructing buildings isn't satisfying because you can barely find them in settlements, combat animations are too slow and attacks don't feel impactful while attack sounds are completely anemic, the UI is convoluted and doesn't communicate a lot of necessary information clearly, etc.And a game absolutely needs to have a good moment-to-moment experience, because you only enjoy good mechanical design THROUGH moment-to-moment experience. Some problems (like the UI) are potentially salvageable enough I'll probably pirate the full version once it releases, but having played the demo for 6 hours, I don't feel any urge to play an hour more. Which doesn't make it the worst game ever by a long shot because I don't think most games are worth any of my time at all, but it's not HoMM3, or "GOTY 2026", by a long shot (unless the year is dreadful).
