anyone played this indie soulslike? it's pretty cool, like rick and morty in dark souls universe

morty

Boy that name fucking sucks. What the hell were they thinking

it's a reference to word nostalgia. it's a play on retro world building

I played about 5 hours of it. The main issue is that it leans too hard on the memes and "references" (if you can call a 1-1 copy of Firelink Shrine a reference) when its actual worldbuilding was more interesting. The thematic parallels between a dying MMO with the few stragglers being either overly-invested griefers or people with nowhere else to go and the average blighted world of a souls game was novel, but they didn't do enough with it. I felt like I got more out of Sir Whoopass because at least that game knew it was shit and had a good time with it. Notalgaia didn't have tight enough controls to justify its difficulty and didn't have good enough writing to justify its jokes. I think if they'd trusted the game could actually be decent it would've been fine but anything worthwhile is buried in irony and deliberate failure.

Played the game and I feel the same way, it felt like the setting couldn't decide whether it wanted to be based on an MMO or a linear single-player RPG, and couldn't decide what all the companions with stories were supposed to be.

oh yeah, i put sir whoopass on the wishlist too. Is humor better there?

Sort of? I can't recall any particular jokes that stood out but the game's not trying to be difficult so it has a pleasantly nostalgic jank to it like a licensed PS2 game. Dashing into slopes sends you flying because your momentum is redirected in unpredictable ways and the fall damage can kill you. None of your weapons or unlocks are balanced against each other. Your best melee weapon is using your jetpack to light people on fire.

I had a pleasant enough 8 hours with it but it's about as remarkable and well-built as the name "Sir Whoopass" implies.
