Sooner or later youll find two or three games that you will nolife to get really good and it will be a fun time, but it will also make you angry and exhausted a lot. At some point you will get pissed if youre not leading the scoreboare, ultimatively leaving you more angry and unsatisfied after gaming than before.
Once youve had enough or the community dies out and you move on to other games, you will see that theyre very similar. Similar mechanics, similar systems, but the nolifing screaming kids youve bashed into the ground have been replaced with new screaming kids. You realize that youve already had a similar experience already and you dont want to spend another couple of hundreds of hours getting good

The reflexes probably also get a little bit worse but as long as youre not playing quake: a bit of tactics, experience anf patience at the right time can work wonders, especially in mp fps

Maybe it's normal to become less competitive with age. I'm 37 and love PvP games. It is just unfortunate that there aren't really any stand out pvp shooters right now. BF6 is the closest to tolerable and I have a 4.198 K/D right now (I only play Conquest though since it is Battlefield and that is the only Battlefield game mode in the game). But it isn't exactly a competitive shooter. It is a casual one and I enjoy it for that. I wish Rainbow Six Siege didn't die a horrific esports induced death. Year 1-3 was peak. I kept playing every day until about 2023 when it was essentially dead (60k cheaters banned per month on PC out of an average unique player count of 90k). Was a good competitive shooter and I was quite good at it.
I wish we could get a proper arena shooter again. Where is Quake and Unreal Tournament?
Speaking of if you're a no-PvP guy but want to scratch that arena shooter itch check out Roboquest. The campaign co-op is sublime. It handles like a dream. My wife and I played through the entire thing in one sitting while at her parents on vacation in Norway.
