because it was always 3D
>>
it evolved into games like revengeance/dmc/bayo/nier2b

there are plenty of 3D beat em ups, unfortunately most are religated to the 5th and 6th gen

>revengeance/dmc/bayo
those are hack n slash games
>nier
that is an action rpg

There is functionally zero difference between "hack n slash" and brawler genres. It's just an evolved form of the same thing.
>>
>>729046906
the basic gameplay concept of a 2d brawler is lining up groups of enemies and doing crowd control with jabs, and finishing off those groups with your 3 punch combo. true 3d not just a belt scroller with foreground makes this unintuitive at best.
>>
>>729046906
beat em ups are about controlling space like a fighting game. even when fighting games went to 3D they still stuck to 2D gameplay. bups had a bunch of failed attempts at 3D since they abandoned the space control in favor of nonsense. now your typical bup is 2D while also abandoning controlling space in favor of being a sandbag juggler. There's no point in labbing a sandbag juggler when you can just lab in a fighting game and do combos against actual players.

Are musous beatemups? Feels like they are.

They did. 3D beat-em-ups were good even in the 90s, and action games that used 3D space in the 00s that stuck utilized concepts from beat-em-ups as old as 1989's Final Fight.

>>729051362
Not really. In musous you're mowing down fodder enemies in huge groups. In good beat-em-ups the enemies are each individually threatening in some way either directly or just by taking up space/angles that you would use to escape the direct threats. Musous are more about controlling the map and your failstate is not controlling enough or death by a thousand cuts instead of death by four punches in the face.

I thought so too but then I played an earlier musou (dw4hyper) and the little fucking grunts would not let me get off a combo on officers ever.

>evolved
Devolved*

I have somewhat limited experience with the main games so that could be true. I've played a couple of DW, some of the licensed Musous, and a bit of Sengoku Basara.

It didn't. They were just ignored in the west.

Based, Dynamite Cop also ruled.

The only truly great MK game to be honest.
>>
>>729051225
hack n slash is melee focused
beat em up is hand to hand
>>
>>729052741
So DMC1 changes genres depending on if you have Alastor or Ifrit?
>>
>>729050320
Then why are these games worse than beat em ups
>>
Because they weren't fun? They were mostly arcade games that are impossible to beat without spending a lot of money.
Worse, they failed to evolve. How many have such dumb mechanics like it costs health to use your cool moves? It's crazy how few of these games ever added ANY other mechanics.
>>
>>729046906
it didn't
3d beat em ups are way better
>>
>>729053015
>no mechanics bloat
This is a good thing
>>
>>729046906
1. it's a shit genre
2. there were plenty of 3D brawlers on PS1 and even PS2; they all failed because the fundamental mechanics are far too basic
3. character action games superseded them

ultimately, these games are just shit. it's a genre that only survives with some sort of spectacle, or for primate-brained people who get off on basic violence.
>>729051362
musou is essentially a beatemup. they have as much gameplay depth.
>>
>>729046906
I've never been able to get into beat em ups, and I recently played through a few of them on the NES to completion like double dragon, battletoads and double dragons, and TMNT 2, so you can't say I haven't given them a fair shake. I just find the combat super boring.

It's a shame too, because I thought pre-beat em ups like Kung Fu Master were kind of fun. I think I just liked it better when everything died in one hit (but you were more fragile to compensate).
>>
>>729053269
nes beatemups are primitive, play some arcade classics like Alien vs Predator, The Punisher and Denjin Makai.
>>
>>729046906
They peaked with God Hand and had nowhere to go
