Cause Decima doesn't use any RT due to PS5 limitations.
PS5/SX just don't have the performance for good RT GI unless it's a software based solution which is heavily compromised. They can get away with RT reflections however but Guerrilla Games admitted they didn't want to change the engine's pipeline too much and focused on efficiency.

Early build is Unreal Engine (3 or 4, don't know which), final game is DICE's Frostbite engine.

EA saw how impressive DICE's games were and forced other devs to use the same engine, thinking they would be just as impressive. Problem is that it's an engine that was never meant for widespread adoption, so the documentation was trash and the engine was poorly suited for anything that wasn't Battlefield. Good example of how just because something is impressive from the user-end doesn't automatically make it a good fit for devs

I disagree. The capability of some of the comprehensive lighting solutions we have now, like Cyberpunk's path tracing or UE5 Lumen, is amazing. Detailed lighting, sharp shadows, specular highlights, across the whole scene including moving objects and dynamic light sources. Some games made now look amazing. It's just that those games are usually not particularly fun for whatever reason. The games designed to be fun are for some reason shipping with PS4 quality graphics still.

It is actualy kinda wacky. We have games like Witcher 3, Phantom Pain, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, or Robocop which all look great and run on my 10 year old PC on high. The grass roots art scene has died, because Western comics are dead and traditional art has been killed to make way for modern art bullshit which has nothing to do with talent and is simply a combination of money laundering and nepo jobs for useless millennial children. I feel like something people miss with these is that sure, maybe brushing aside all the performance stuff it COULD look more realistic with RTX, but is that necessarily better? I mean there are so many instances where scene composition matters, the lighting is a huge part of that and sometimes you just have to fudge it to make something that looks "good" on an "artistic" level if that makes any sense, whereas sure in principle you could have a super solver that gets the most realistic lighting, my point is asking if that really is actually better, and whether that should even be a goal? I guess sure for normie core shit like GTA VI, the realism is undoubtedly part of the appeal, but at the same time I think it's difficult to make a broader argument for it

The reason MGS3 look better than the "remake" is because Delta was fucking made with zero fucking passion. They rely on the lighting engine to light scenes rather than go in by hand.

Unironically automation has not only made devs lazier but games are uglier. Rather than taking time to use the resources and restrictions of a console to make a game look good despite it's limitations devs rely on the raw power of machines now to do the work.

I've been playing Detroit Become Human lately, and it's a super good looking game, but as a movie-game, it can focus on that more easily.
I haven't played DS2, but I suspect that I's kind of like that, because the gameplay seems pretty limited.
I honestly believe that the true upgrades in graphics shouldn't be in lightning effects and such, but in animations. It's 2025 and gliding runs, shitty ragdolls, screwed up lipsync, clipping and so on are still common.
LOD improvements would be nice too, like the UE5 is implementing now some voxel trees, right?
