I recently tried mint and it was very similar to windows 10. I've never used Linux before so I was pleasantly surprised with it. It ran fine, all my games worked. So I can only really suggest that one & I'd say it was great.
Takes a few hours at first messing around with terminal and finding programs for Linux as apposed to windows but it was smooth enough.
I will add that when I played games my fans were going crazy just like in windows 11, maybe just needed configuring but ultimately it made me go back to win10 which is where I'm currently at.
Linux is made by various people doing it in their free time, for free.. whilst windows is a multi billion dollar company hiring massive amounts of professionals so it stands to reason windows is better. But ask yourself if some data being sent to microslop is really worth moving to Linux ?

Basically any Linux distribution is based off of Arch, Debian, or Fedora.
Mint is Debian based, Nobara and Bazzite are Fedora based, Cachy is Arch based.
Find out what base distro you like the most, then move to a more specialized one if you want.
Mint is the easiest one, Nobara, Cachy, and Bazzite are the big gamer approved distros, but at the end of the day they are just their base distro with extras.
FWIW, SteamOS is Arch based.

I'll spare you the distro hopping.
There is no 1:1 conversion from windows to linux. All those "beginner friendly distros" really just install dependencies like flatpak so that you can install certain apps without jumping through too many hoops, but those distros break easily. Aboid Mint, PopOS, Zorin, and any of those.

Realistically, there's only 3 worthwhile distros you'll actually use.

Stable, predictable, never breaks. After enough tweaking, you'll have an OS you might settle with for the next decade.
>Fedora
Complete opposite of Debian. It's a rolling release so there's constant patches for new features, bug fixes and whatever, but it also breaks constantly. I'd say this is the prime linux experience.
>Arch
The meme tranny distro. It gives you full control and requires a decent understanding of computers. The reason it's so popular is because you can tweak it to your aboslute liking, but even after a couple of hours you'll still have issues getting bluetooth to work. Pacman is also the best package manager. Avoid this one for now, as it might not be your use case.

If I had to recommend you a distro that actually "Just werks", I'd say CachyOS. It's arch based (meaning that really it's arch with a bunch of stuff installed on top) and it's made specifically for gaming. Right out of the box, you get a wine integration (a tool designed to run windows programs) and your graphics cards will probably work without any tweaking. You can just open a terminal and type "sudo pacman -S steam yay" and whatever else you want, and boom, you're set.

The reason why I didn't mention it before is because Arch based distros come and go, just like Manjaro did. It's super popular right now, it might get abandoned in the future, but if that does happen, you can always turn to Debian or Fedora, or you could use archinstall and just build a cachyos equivalent with the help of chatgpt.

Also always use KDE Plasma. Best desktop by far.

If you want something easy that works fine, then just get Linux MINT Cinnamon edition; it's very similar to windows in it's layout, has a working app store, supports use of .deb files in place of .exe files as well (some other distros require you to use the command line terminal for most software) and will support a lot of software out of the box without much headache

if you just want to do gaming and pretty much nothing else on the PC, then Bazzite is probably the best one as it's basically a reverse-engineered SteamOS (because Valve haven't released a version for people to download and install on any machine), it will be one of the best perfoming distros for games, and essentially turn your PC into a Steam Machine with a console-like experience

if you feel like getting your hands dirty and getting the absolute most performance possible at the cost of requiring you to do maintenance and tinker then an Arch forked distro would be best, like CatchyOS

Game compatibility will be practically the same, especially when you're using Steam which brings its own versions of a ton of packages.

If the answer is the package manager, then the package maintainer should quit his "job" and do something else, because the whole point is that such conflicts don't occur. You basically just have Debian (need to fuck with package management to get the right versions of some stuff, but stable) and Arch (don't need to fuck with package management much, but can change a lot, some options can occasionally change enough that you need to change your configs after an update in order to make everything werk, usually just GRUB, but read the news to check if there is a problem before an update or just install something that forces you to read the Arch news). After that you just have derivatives of those that try to address what they think are issues with those distros, for Debian it's usually just package tweaks and for Arch it's a lot of specific configs.
Arch is probably most suited for casual use and if you need to pick a derivative of it, then you probably just want one with a live installer like EndeavorOS and not much else to avoid running into some random thing that isn't covered by official troubleshooting on the wiki or an install guide.

Fedora, Mint (little bit old packages but good), PopOS. It doesn't really matter that much if you are going to just launch Steam and play your games. If you deviate from that, be willing to learn new things and You will be just fine.
