Im a complete fuckin' retard and want to leave Windows behind. Whats the least gay Linux to move to? Ive seen people suggest Mint, CachyOS, Bazza, Nobara, Arch, etc. Part of the problem is theres too fuckin many, and it seems like they all have their own sets of bullshit to deal with.Whats the /v/ gold standard for linux? Can we adopt a single version as /v/ approved?
People here will never agree to a single thing. In any case, I switched to mint recently and had no problems so far.

>>729063931same, started using mint recently and i've been happy with it so far. i hear really good things about cachyos but if you're looking for hand holding and no bullshit then mint is very simple imo.
Here's an infographic that explains basically all the important shit about picking a distro
You shouldn't use distros maintained by randoms that offer little benefit and it's scary that people keep recommending themUse Ubuntu or it's flavors. It's out of favor with linuxfags for questionable reasons but it's still THE linux distro.

>>729063783Shut the fuck up and install Archlinux already. God damn it, it's not that fucking hard - and if it is too much for your baby brain to handle there's a million jewtube videos that will hold your hand and walk you through it step by step.

>>729063783I recently tried mint and it was very similar to windows 10. I've never used Linux before so I was pleasantly surprised with it. It ran fine, all my games worked. So I can only really suggest that one & I'd say it was great.Takes a few hours at first messing around with terminal and finding programs for Linux as apposed to windows but it was smooth enough.I will add that when I played games my fans were going crazy just like in windows 11, maybe just needed configuring but ultimately it made me go back to win10 which is where I'm currently at.Linux is made by various people doing it in their free time, for free.. whilst windows is a multi billion dollar company hiring massive amounts of professionals so it stands to reason windows is better. But ask yourself if some data being sent to microslop is really worth moving to Linux ?
>>729063783My linux laptop updated itself when I rebooted todaywhen it booted back up it just had a command line interface instead of my usual login screenthis is why people don't like linux
>>729063783Basically any Linux distribution is based off of Arch, Debian, or Fedora.Mint is Debian based, Nobara and Bazzite are Fedora based, Cachy is Arch based.Find out what base distro you like the most, then move to a more specialized one if you want.Mint is the easiest one, Nobara, Cachy, and Bazzite are the big gamer approved distros, but at the end of the day they are just their base distro with extras.FWIW, SteamOS is Arch based.
>>729063783There just isn't a version of linux that's both stable and useful. You grab something like debian stable and then 4 months in your browser needs an update you can't get in order to visit half the websites out there without breaking. You grab something like arch and it's a dice roll whether your computer is even functional anymore after every update.

Why cant Linux run everythign Windows does.
>>729064196>BazziteUnironically poisoning the well.Immutable distros are TERRIBLE for desktop use. They're meant for server farms where you have like a single reason to run them. I'll spare you the distro hopping. There is no 1:1 conversion from windows to linux. All those "beginner friendly distros" really just install dependencies like flatpak so that you can install certain apps without jumping through too many hoops, but those distros break easily. Aboid Mint, PopOS, Zorin, and any of those.Realistically, there's only 3 worthwhile distros you'll actually use.>DebianStable, predictable, never breaks. After enough tweaking, you'll have an OS you might settle with for the next decade.>FedoraComplete opposite of Debian. It's a rolling release so there's constant patches for new features, bug fixes and whatever, but it also breaks constantly. I'd say this is the prime linux experience. >ArchThe meme tranny distro. It gives you full control and requires a decent understanding of computers. The reason it's so popular is because you can tweak it to your aboslute liking, but even after a couple of hours you'll still have issues getting bluetooth to work. Pacman is also the best package manager. Avoid this one for now, as it might not be your use case.If I had to recommend you a distro that actually "Just werks", I'd say CachyOS. It's arch based (meaning that really it's arch with a bunch of stuff installed on top) and it's made specifically for gaming. Right out of the box, you get a wine integration (a tool designed to run windows programs) and your graphics cards will probably work without any tweaking. You can just open a terminal and type "sudo pacman -S steam yay" and whatever else you want, and boom, you're set. The reason why I didn't mention it before is because Arch based distros come and go, just like Manjaro did. It's super popular right now, it might get abandoned in the future, but if that does happen, you can always turn to Debian or Fedora, or you could use archinstall and just build a cachyos equivalent with the help of chatgpt. Also always use KDE Plasma. Best desktop by far.

>>729073358>People still hate debian in current year.Your distro is probably just a grandson to Debian. Hail to the king, baby.
>>729063783If you want something easy that works fine, then just get Linux MINT Cinnamon edition; it's very similar to windows in it's layout, has a working app store, supports use of .deb files in place of .exe files as well (some other distros require you to use the command line terminal for most software) and will support a lot of software out of the box without much headacheif you just want to do gaming and pretty much nothing else on the PC, then Bazzite is probably the best one as it's basically a reverse-engineered SteamOS (because Valve haven't released a version for people to download and install on any machine), it will be one of the best perfoming distros for games, and essentially turn your PC into a Steam Machine with a console-like experienceif you feel like getting your hands dirty and getting the absolute most performance possible at the cost of requiring you to do maintenance and tinker then an Arch forked distro would be best, like CatchyOS
>>729064969thank you
>>729063783The only Linux I have ever used is Linux mint. I have no idea if it's good for gaming cause I only use Linux to run my jellyfin server so after I set that up I haven't touched it. It's pretty retard proof but again I've never played games on it

>>729073891Best answer itt
>>729063783Bazzite is a good middle-of-the-road choice imo. I use Cachy personally but there's still too much potential for stability issues and updates breaking stuff. Mint is very good if you just want an OS for web browsing but the packages you pick up by default are going to be a bit outdated.
>>729073891Sorry, do you think Bazzite is just the handheld version or something? You seem confused and you're going to mislead the OP into thinking that's what Bazzite is, glorified Steam Big Picture Mode with a desktop in the background. That isn't true. It's a 'normal' (you know what i mean) distro with a desktop environment and everything
>>729075184If he is brand new to Linux, then I don't think saying "just use Bazzite and set up a Distrobox!" is good advice at allIf you work with computers a lot, it's easy to underestimate just how inept most people are with them, but the entire fact you need to set up Distrobox in the first place to use the vast majority of non-gaming software on Bazzite is a good reason to introduce it as a "gaming-only" OS
question, do I need to reinstall linux if I switch mobos or cpu like with windows? This hinges on weather I make the switch to dual booting
>>729068795https://youtu.be/_23dFb50Z2Y
>>729075539you should be able to swap even if you take the drive and put it in another pc, there are distros that are even designed around running off a flash drivethere are two possible issues thoughfirst being nvidia because they're niggers so you might have to deal with their drivers not liking itsecond is if you pick cachyos where their kernels are made for modern cpus but for that you can just install the mainstream kernel via kernel manager

It's almost like having programs be entirely stand-alone monoliths was a better idea after all.

>>729084859How are you installing the emulator on Linux in that scenario? If the answer is the package manager, then the package maintainer should quit his "job" and do something else, because the whole point is that such conflicts don't occur. For software that needs to be installed from outside of the package manager, yeah, solutions like Flatpak or AppImage are often better than just downloading an executable and hoping it's compatible with your packages.

After that you just have derivatives of those that try to address what they think are issues with those distros, for Debian it's usually just package tweaks and for Arch it's a lot of specific configs.Arch is probably most suited for casual use and if you need to pick a derivative of it, then you probably just want one with a live installer like EndeavorOS and not much else to avoid running into some random thing that isn't covered by official troubleshooting on the wiki or an install guide.>>729068795It will always work and teaching someone how to do it is just copy and paste with mad libs.
