The PSP was a really impressive gadget, and was really ahead of its time as a portable media device before the ubiquity of smartphones, but the DS just had a vastly superior library.The Vita I have similar complaints about as the Switch, where it's trying to occupy a weird in-between space between portable video game device and full fledged console experience and ends up doing neither particularly well. Its games aren't designed to be played in short bursts at intermittent times, and it performs far worse than the version on better hardware.

Both DS and PSP were excellent in their own, though I'd say the PSP had a lasting effect on me. But I won't disagree that it had plenty of issues, I also recall how the european PSN (when I first started) was a mess while the Japanese PSN was well organized on the other hand. Plus, there were the Japanese Vita apps for Yakuza Zero and Isshin where you could play the coliseum and gambling minigames, while transferring back-and-forth your save data for the main game on PS3 or PS4.Another unfortunate thing of the Vita is that Japanese devs tried to squeeze their PS4 games on the thing with large drawbacks so it was hard to recommend these versions. Unlike on Switch where the concessions aren't really there.

Sony is going to waste millions making a PS6 "handheld" that'll be like $700 and a massive brick that plays AAA games badly when all they need to do to kneecap Nintendo is grab some old phone components and make a handheld that actually fits in your pocket and has lots of neat low budget games like the handhelds of old, sell it for like $250 and it's over.

Sounds like a cope because of the situation in the Japanese market and there is this strong common misunderstanding of handheld consoles being popular over there because of the form factor (and not because of the games themselves).and besides Playstation surrendered all the support from small Japanese studios to Nintendo, and the latter went pretty hard into advertising indies as well.

Honestly if the Switch proved anything it was that maintaining two completely separate hardware lines with completely separate software was no longer sustainable and at the same time we've reached a point with hardware where portable hardware required less compromises to run console games compared to before, giving both the means and the motivation for a hybrid console like the Switch. The real question is when will Sony finally jump in on this bandwagon and do something more than the half-assed portal.

Sure nowadays many of these got newer ports on smartphones and other consoles, but back then it wasn't just a ports and remakes machine like the PSP.
