the usual suspects, pick your poison>turn basedwhatever latest dragon quest available on your system, whatever latest persona game available on your system, and probably yakuza >actionfromsoft games, nioh, ff7 remake, tales, ys
>>729071981pick your dogshit*
>>729071806Final Fantasy VII (original)It was my first jerp and by god it'll be your first jerp too.
>>729072034>seething troonlennial has an instant melty when I mention real video games that people have actually played and loved
>>729071981>whatever latest dragon quest available on your system, whatever latest persona game available on your system, and probably yakuzaFucking hell, what did OP do to you? Rape your pet dog? Jesus christ. This is cruel. OP, please banish this "man" and his "advice" from your mind
>>729071806It's too late now, you had to be there and started off as a kid. Now, no matter wether you're recommended an old or modern one it won't stick anymore.
>>729071806FF2 to get an understanding of where the genre peaked
>>729071806Dark Souls
>>729071981I think Yakuza 7/Like a Dragon might have the worst JRPG battle system ive ever seen outside of straight up kusoge. People who play these games need checked
>>729072189if you are 30+ you should head back to either reddit or /vr/ and you better take this advicedon't shit up /v/ with your ancient fossils, this is a board for people that play modern games and actively engage with their hobbyI will explain it to you like if you were a 5 year old kid (by mental development you must be stuck there): there's no point in going back to gta vice city if you have already experienced gta5, which is objectively better in every imaginable metricthe four niggas in a row combat has barely changed, new games have better QoL features, better graphics and so on
>>729071806Grandia saturn version translated to ENG
>>729071806Dragon Quest I on the SNES.

>>729071806What's the one in the middle?
>>729073108unicorn overlord. it's good but vanillaware has some sort of undying grudge towards PC so they only release their stuff on handhelds/consoles
>>729073269I imagined it could be Vanillaware. Fuck them for forsaking PC.
>>729071806Star Wars Outlaws.
>>729072391>which is objectively better in every imaginable metricexcept for the radio, the story, the setting etc
>>729071806Fate go.
Octopath
>>729071806expedition 33
>>729072391But 5 is unplayable trash and VC is the peak of the series.
>>729071806FF7 through 10 in release orderpreferably on real hardware, the remasters suck. emulation is okay tooChrono Trigger and Golden Sun are neat too
>>729073439>>729073269Eh fuck them anyway dude. The thing emulates smooth af even on a potato.
Romancing Saga 2 RotS is a bit atypical for a JRPG but a good entry point for the series, and a good choice if you are looking for something more freeform and where system matters.
>>729071806>which one do i start withGrandia or one of the Dragon Quest games.Grandia is a pretty good introduction to the genre, and does a ton of things right. Also, unlike some other games which I might mention which are also good, it doesn't have overly complex systems that would literally take hours to even understand. The biggest problems is that, if you hold the rest of the JRPG genre against the Grandia games, you'll probably find them lacking.Dragon Quest is pretty much the opposite situation. It's fairly basic in comparison, and is pretty much literally what all other JRPGs are build upon. You'll probably want to play DQ8 or DQ11 as your first Dragon Quest game, as they're the best entries into the series. But you could also start with just Dragon Quest 1 and see where everything started. Dragon Quest, overall, tends to have fairly basic combat/roles and the story and themes tend to be classical heroism, which makes for a decent basic story without all the "I gain 100 levels and then kill God at the end of the plot" silliness that a lot of JRPGs fall into.I'll also note that the story of the Dragon Quest games (and the Grandia games) are completely unrelated from each other, so don't worry about starting with a later game in the series.
>>729071806Final Fantasy V
Not played one either, a friend swore by Cyber Sleuth to me
>>729073906Emulate Grandia if playing them.Don't fall for the lazy steam version.Setting up emulation nowadays is piss easy anyway
Chrono Trigger is a solid choice. I would imagine that Live a Live may be relatively accessible to beginners, too.Mainline Shin Megami Tensei games are great but a bit too system heavy for beginners. Modern Persona games have way too much useless slop.Unicorn Overlord is a great tactics RPG (it's an updated take on classic Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre). If tactics is what you want, Final Fantasy Tactics is a good choice too.>>729072739DQ7 is pretty accessible for beginners.>>729071918KitN is kino but definitely not for the faint-hearted. >>729073750FF6 still the best FF tho ! ;p
>>729073906>>729073979>Emulate Grandia if playing them. This is true. They didn't like the pixels on Grandia 1 and so shoved an ugly filter that made everything look terrible. PS1 emulation is piss easy to just stick with that.
>>729071806Just play the best one of each franchise>Final Fantasy 9>Pokemon Black/White 2>Persona 4>Dragon Quest 11>Digimon World 1>Shin Megami Tensei Strange JourneyAnd go on from there
DQ8, FF7 or Ni no Kuni
>>729073906>Grandia is a pretty good introduction to the genre, and does a ton of things right.Grandia feeling of going on a great adventure across the world is great and absolutely unmatched in modern JRPGs. It's a cultural shift thing, anime/manga are the same (japs don't know anymore how to do great adventure anime series like Fushigi no umi no nadia).
I'm not sure if it's a good one to be your first, but Breath of Fire 3 had a nice vibe and gameplay. And a nice time skip.
>>729074475It's actually not a good idea. It has these weird tutor/master mechanics that affect your growth rates and teach some skills, you can also learn skills from monsters. It's a little bit too much for a beginner.
>>729071806Final Fantasy Mystic Questliterally designed to be babbys first jrpgturns out to be pretty decent overall, great music and some innovative features that wouldnt be revisited by the industry for over a decade
OP here thanks for all the suggestions lads i think im gonna go with Grandia, looks really kinothe steam remaster is smeared to shit so should i go with saturn or ps1
>>729074697I only had a PS1 but IIRC Grandia 1 was originally released for the Saturn.
>>729074697Saturn version has better graphics and environmental shadowsit's been fully translatedruns great in Retroarch's Beetle Saturn core
>>729071806Xenoblade Chronicles (either of the numbered entry works) is probably a good representation in the good, the bad and the ugly.
>>729072391Fuck off back
>>729072391Rage bait used to be better.
>>729072391holy seethe
>>729072391the existence of the Vice City remake renders your diatribe laughablehah!
>>729073979Grandia is great but idk if i'd recommend it as a first JRPG just because it's fairly unconventional in gameplay and kind of dog ugly. Definitely one to play after a couple more standard jerps though. Going FF7 -> Wild Arms -> BoF3 -> Grandia was a good route for the PS1 gamer back in the day
>>729071806Play a REAL Shin Megami Tensei
>>729075979Also dungeons drag a lot.
>>729075979>please play 120 hours of boring JRPGs before getting to the good oneNo thanks. I'll just recommend the good JRPGs. If they're curious, they can still go back to FF7 and Wild Arms. If they don't like Grandia, then they aren't likely to be eager to start playing Breath of Fire instead.
