I was more meaning that an "american aesthetic" is hard to define because of how varied the landscape actually is, such that "american culture" beyond stereotypical aspects such as obesity and flags and freedom is similarly hard to define.
Texas and Montana are vastly different places in the same way Oregon and Florida are.

There are some good example of this in the thread, like RDR2 and Days Gone
The issue is that there are large sections (population-wise) of America that are relatively flat urban sprawls and most of the people making games live in those parts of the country. America has some absolutely stunning areas and unfortunately we never see those in video games. Zion National Park is the most beautiful place I've ever visited and I doubt I'll ever see a game there

Alan Wake is a little special in this regard because the connections between Finland and Washington state are real. I'm sure Sam Lake has spent time in Washington before and knows people that live there.

Even though the Mountain West is associated with quintessential American-ness in pop-culture, it's also the least populated area of the country. It's kind of like saying all Brazilians live in the Amazon rainforest or all Chinese live in Shaolin temples atop limestone mountains. It's more of a scenic icon than actually representative of daily American experience. What most Americans see everyday is more like pic related.

American suburbs are probably the best homes in the world in terms of comfort. That's why it's so many people want to move here. It's just kind of boring if you're a young person craving adventure.

That picture is from my hometown of Racine, Wisconsin which isn't a hot real estate market. Median price is listed around $225K. The picture I showed is closer to the $300K+ side, and some of the more ghetto areas are going to be more like $175K.

Also there are essentially two kinds of American suburb: old suburbs and new subdivisions. Old suburbs are charmingly intimate: brick buildings, tree cover, narrower streets, and 10-15min drive to downtown. Whereas new subdivisions are very cookie cutter construction, multi-lane feeder roads, scraggly tree saplings, and arduous 45min+ commutes.

Since migration is dictated mostly by employment opportunities and more recently migrants seeking warmer climates, the charming old suburbs in the Midwest/Northeast (outside of tier one metros like NYC/Boston) are bizarrely cheaper than the machine printed subdivisions in the South. There's also a weird dynamic where conservatives champion older idyllic suburbs as American Greatness but in practice these places are mostly inhabited by liberals.
