I know people that worked on this. ama
>>
My dad works at Nintendo too.
>>
why did they choose such yonic imagery?

I don't have any questions, but if you could let them know that they're fags next time you talk, I'd be much obliged
>>

what were they thinking?
>>
>>729083973
Did they fail upwards?
>>
I feel bad for the devs more on the engine/coding side of things, the game runs damn well and is the only major 120 FPS game right now on Switch 2.
>>
>>729084258
Yeah, this at least guarantees some of them will still have a job
>>
>>729083973
Whos idea was to put a dessert in the middle of all the maps?
>>
>>729084258
The people actually building the game are obviously incredibly talented. Everyone whose job it was to make it interesting failed miserably.
>>
>>729083973
My working theory is that MP4 was so troubled because there was a lot of back-and-forth tugging between Tanabe and Retro. Is that true? It feels like two quarter-games glued together.
>>
>>729084754
The game suffers from a death of a thousand cuts. Nothing is bad enought to break the enjoyment but the annoyances pile up.
>>
>>729084621
Tanabe. The desert was his big idea for the game from the start despite neither the original Dev team or Retro being able to realize it. The engine used to develop the prime games was made for small rooms only, so Sol Valley represented a huge technical hurdle from the very start of development right up until the end. Tanabe refused to let go of it because it was the game's defining feature.

>>729085002
Nope, Tanabe always got his way even when it was ill advised.

>>729084248
The studio will stay open, but only because Nintendo corporate being impressed with the visual and technical prowess of the game. They think Retro will continue to be a valuable asset, Metroid or no.
>>
>>729083973
What do they eat?
>>
>>729083973
What Pokemon would you fuck
>>
>>729085337
If Tanabe always got his way why is Sylux such a footnote. Was Retro not planning to use him at all?
>>
>>729085337
So Beyond is shit for the exact reason Other M was shit- zero oversight of the producer. What’s the likelihood Nintendo wrangles this tard? Sakamoto eventually snapped out of it after all.
>>
>>729083973
WHAT WERE THEY THIIIIINKING?!
>>
>>729083973
Do you know the person who made the Grievers "song" that plays when they attack? That was an annoying desicion, I get the idea of sounding like the screams of the dammed but after hearing it again and again interrupting the music I just turn the volume of my game to zero.
>>
>>729084621
>dessert
>>
They should be ashamed for their words and deeds.
>>
>>729085768
NTA but it's very obvious Sylux is supposed to appear in future entries too
>>
>>729085768
Whenever Retro asked questions about the nature of his role the order from up to was "not to worry about it" and "keep it simple."

Gameplay wise, Sylux was meant to be a more active presence in the world that impeded Samus's progress more often, but the game underwent a final review this year that lead to most of these sequences being cut for pacing.

>>729085807
Unlikely, since this was Tanabe's last game as producer. He considers this his swan song for the company. Rise Tabata is set to take over the producer role for Metroid Prime going forward, if there is another game.

>>729085925
Most of the composers were not stateside. Sound designers and composers were on different ends of the continent which lead to them not being on the same wavelengths on things like this.
>>
>>729083973
Why are these new characters called "Marvel" characters when they are clearly DEI characters? They literally fit all the stereotypical roles. The good, strong, black, loving family man. The annoying, smart white person who won't shut up. And the strong, empowered female who can handle everything on her own. Anyone with a pulse can see that these characters are only there to fill the woke DEI quota. And yet, for whatever reason, normies pretend this is Marvel's fault lol
>>
>>729085768
The Metroids being an even smaller footnote is worse, literally just amounts to some bosses having green weak points because of some random new psychic control ability the opening crawl drops. I can't believe this is what was imagined as what they'd have the Federation Force stinger lead into.
>>
>>729086193
Much of what we understand as modern DEI came straight from Marvel movies so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here. At any rate I can confirm Tanabe was inspired directly by Avengers when cooking up those characters and referenced those movies a lot in production, up until the very end.
>>
>>729086086
I agree, the only question in my mind is if the troopers die or become turncoats for survival and 'emotional impact' in a sequel.
>>
>>729086193
>The good, strong, black, loving family man
Anthony Higgs?

Okay, i'll bite. Did you ask them why in the world did they think making such simple areas that look and feel like straight corridors was a good idea? Specially after Zelda finally broke away from handholding the player in BotW.

I honestly think that's the biggest flaw of the game and what truly makes it a disappointment. The rest of the problems and flaws are related in some way to this. And I didn't even dislike the desert itself.
>>
>>729086285
The Metroids were one of the biggest points of contention in development. Retro constantly asked questions on the nature of their reappearance was and what their role was supposed to be in this title, since it had at least become tradition on their end to make their appearance significant. Nintendo was so careless in this regard that they got some factoids about their lore and appearance wrong. They couldn't answer questions as simple as whether they were supposed to be clones or not.
>>
>>729086432

Huh. I got excited about the Metroids being actually mochtroids because of their appearance, but that was never brought up again. This is odd. Metroid Dread had more interesting story and lore than Metroid Prime 4 of all things.
>>
>>729086298
>Marvel invented DEI and forced it into video games

I think the motorcycle and Sylux are cool concepts so give Tanabe a high five for the only good ideas in the game even if his bad ideas got in too

Prime 5 introduces Trace and the Kriken. Sylux was trying to stop him by gathering an army of Space Pirates, Metroids, and the Lamorn artifacts from Prime 4.
>>
>>729086382
It began preproduction once Metroid Prime 4 went gold, but low sales could lead to a pivot. I don't have any information other than that.

>>729086390
The intent behind the simplistic areas was that they'd serve as a contrast to sol valley which was conceived as a larger, multilayered, mazelipe map akin to TOTK's hyrule. The problem was that neither dev team was actually able to realize this vision within the constraints of the Metroid engine, and a revamp of the engine would have pushed the release date out a few more years. Something NoJ wasn't comfortable with considering it's already one of the most expensive games they've ever made through sheer time in the oven.
>>
>>729086192
That would explain all the more open rooms that feel like there would be a boss fight but have nothing in them. Not gonna lie I liked the two fake sylux fights but more of them and it would have been boring. Hunters at least had 5 different guys yo break the monotony.
>>
>>729086567
The motorcycle was actually Retro's idea, as a compromise when Tanabe refused to cut the desert. He originally wanted Samus to cross the region on foot.

>>729086542

Retro actually brought this up mid development, but their appearance is simply an oversight by NOJ who handled a lot of the cinematics.
>>
>>729086709
>He originally wanted Samus to cross the region on foot
Does he enjoy the suffering of others?

Sounds like bullshit. If they realized they could not make an intrincate overworld, that realization must have come ages ago, and the game would have not been made. Or if they really needed to deliver, they would have kept the simple overworld as it currently is and made the separate areas more complex, which would have been a completely feasible kind of pivot, instead of the absolutely vapid dungeons we got.

I'm not saying that you're lying about your contacts. But if that's the excuse they gave you, it's clearly not the truth.

Im pretty sure the cinematics were famously handled by ex Naughty Dog devs, which is why they look quite nice.

this entire thread is a LARP anon. we’re all still coping with the fact nintendo beefed what should have been an easy slam dunk
>>
>>729083973
whose decision was it to avoid humanoids that can walk on the ground as enemies? Prime 1 has lots of space pirates (?) that are just walking shooting guys like any other FPS. I don't know how prevalent they are in Prime 2 or 3. but it stood out to me in everything I've seen from Prime 4 that NO such enemy seems to exist when in Prime 1 they were common. why do all the humanoids FLY? why do none of the ground-based characters SHOOT? the only ground-based character I saw shooting at the player was some sand creature in the desert and it walked on all fours and the shots were like a slow grenade launcher (organic sludge of some kind). it really seems like not one enemy in the whole game is just a guy with a gun who can walk. anyone who can shoot directly at you has to hover in the air at all times. why??
>>
>>729087393

I figureso much. But i'm still in shock with the game and I have so many questions that i'd love to ask the devs that i fantasize with the faintest chance at an explanation i get.
>>
So, were all the bad decisions Tanabe's fault?
>>
>>729086608
Reading all this it just sounds like a general lack of direction and terrible development cycle in general. None of the ideas they focused on worked, and everything else is vague because they just focused on stupid shit like the desert with no cohesive vision.

>>729086868
She's worked with retro on every title they've released thus far. I wouldn't expect a major shakeup here personally, but I've had it expressed to me she wouldn't sink the game over a doomed feature.

>>729087256
Part of this is negligence on Nintendo's part. Tanabe wanted to force the feature through regardless because he saw it as this game's differentiating feature. Nintendo left him to his own devices until early this year when the game still wasn't in shape and they put the hammer down. By that point it was too late to feasibly cut it.

There was also supposed to be more connective tissue between areas at one point, but Tanabe shut that down because it would de-emphasize Sol Valley as the player hub.
>>
>>729087742
>VAs, directors and writers
barely useful for nintendo let's be real

>>729087475
The pirates show up at the very start of the game but after that the main enemies are this flying androids that shoot you from afar, robot turrets and this aliens that claw at you.

>>729087178
I remember someone modding Prime 1 to be more fast paced like the 2D Metroids and it ended up looking like Quake.

If Nintendo does layoffs we may know sooner than before then.

Not entirely unprecedented, NST got layoffs after they were converted into a support studio following the Project Hammer debacle.

Some of the robot drones look straight out of Halo, mainly the Forerunner Sentinels.

Of the three voice dialogue heavy games Nintnedo has made (Zelda, DK, Metroid) this had the best voice acting. The others have weird voice direction.
>>
>>729087851
>There was also supposed to be more connective tissue between areas at one point, but Tanabe shut that down because it would de-emphasize Sol Valley as the player hub.

More connective tissue? There's no connective tissue at all to begin with. They're separate areas.

I still don't buy this larp. The problem is not within Sol-Valley. Sol-Valley is barely a problem within the game's general structure. The problem is that the areas are notably simpler and smaller than in previous games, and connective tissue wouldn't have been needed to make them more complex. I'm all about the separate dungeons things if done right, because it worked for Zelda games. The problem is that these dungeons play themselves as they are.

The problem is that the areas are notably simpler and smaller than in previous games. More connective tissue? There's no connective tissue at all to improve. Making them more complex should have been a given if
>>
>>729087475
The enemy variety in Prime 4 is just plain shit.
You got the maintenance bots, the main battle bots, Greivers, and a small handful of bug enemies in the early areas before the bots and Greivers show up.

Primes 1-3 had much more enemy variety, and its made worse that Prime 4 is far more combat focused.
>>
>>729088117
>Prime 1 to be more fast paced
Link? I want to see it.

>>729088278

>>
>>729088516
that was just a fan theory/fake leak
>>
>>729088301
Echoes had plenty of “recycled” enemy types but it was at least justified in-universe as Darklings, and they would often have unique behaviors because they were Ing. Corruption just genuinely has a shit ton of unique enemies. I was so fucking mad when it dawned on me just how little enemy variety Beyond really has.
>>
The only two places i enjoyed were Volt Forge and Ice Belt and that's because soldier interaction is most minimal as this franchise shines best when you are playing in solitude. But even then, i hated all the elevators in Volt Forge and the linear map and in Ice Belt and so forth. Gah.. they completely missed the mark with this game while putting a good nail in place ready to be hit so what the fuck were they thinking.
>>
>>729088530
I hear fake leaks are very popular to catch those who break NDA to journos now. Has anyone been fired for leaking NDA yet?

>>729088560
For me I realized there was something very wrong when I was somewhere around 3 hours into Prime 4 and realized I had around 50% of my logbook complete.
>>
>>729088560
Even if you cut out the dark variants Echoes would still run circles around Beyond in terms of enemy variety.

>>729088028
Pirates being absent pissed me off, their logs are one of my favorite things about Prime 1-3.

>>729088781
The lack of pirates, and by extension their scans is probably a factor on top of the already piss poor enemy variety.

Yeah, felt the same. When i got to the ice belt and saw the wheel robot designs again, after seeing them in the volt forge and also being featured in the trailer, I realized that's what we were getting in the game. Im not sure what the fuck happened but theres a lot of aspects in the game that feel abruptly scarce. Theres no visors, the psychic powers are just old power ups from older games with a lame twist and the areas dont go beyond a few corridors.
>>
>>729089180
I mean Prime 3 and 4 both states that the pirates are made of multiple species with many bases, no reason to assume they're gone forever. It's just Fusion and Dread focused on X-Parasites/evil Chozo armor users.

There were far, far more interruptions from the crew in the original script. In addition, every member of the crew had a side quest that lead to a pick-up, but almost every single one was a joke quest so all but one were cut. As bad as the game's tone was percieved in the lead up to release originally it was a lot worse. What you got in the final release was the bare minimum needed to ensure hiring those actors and doing that mocap didn't strictly go to waste.

>>729089579
Within the studio, the team was surprised how positive reception for the game was and expected it to go over a lot worse.

OP is certainly larping but I was weirdly pissed that the Sergant acknowledged Samus collecting an energy tank.

I always saw the energy tank and ammo expansions as non-digetic. Samus having them or not doesn't affect the plot so I always treated them being reset and found in random vents and shit purely as a gameplay thing.
>>
>>729089834
>>729090129

I was surprised at how boring i found the scans to be. Took me a while to realize the scans in prime games were fun mainly because of the pirate's point of view. I dont understand how could we not have had an extensive amount of scans that allowed us to get to know sylux a lot better. It would have been kino to read him reeeeing about samus and the feds. Poor guy. At least the few minutes he got were good. I honestly like him and want more Sylux.

>>
why the fuck is the desert emptier than the desert in botw

>>729090692
They didn't have developers to spare for this particular title. Again, Retro is technically still working off of the engine they've been using since the GCN era. It's received upgrades since then obviously but a lot of the old bottlenecks still exists. Even if they allocated additional developers to it (which they did) those developers would be constrained by the engine.

>>729090756
See above.
>>
>>729083973
What's Nintendo's endgame by pozzing all their shit up for westoids? Do they really think it's sustainable long-term?
>>
>>729090756
Eh. I didnt mind these. Btw, i played the game on NSW1 and it looks incredible in motion. I was afraid of missing the SW2 improvements, but it looks seriously great. It looks way above what youd expect in the hardware.
>>
>>729090581
There's a more concentrated effort for the Metroid brand to move as a unit, so more people were in the know that a new 2D Metroid is coming than what would have been the case before. There was a road map that included a Dread sequel and Metroid Prime 5 for the Switch 2 shared internally.
>>
>>729090937
why didn't they just switch to unreal
namco 100% used unreal for their attempt, why the fuck would retro go back to a 20-year old pos?
>>
>>729091012
NOA was given more control of the content in games starting in 2020. Not everyone on the Japanese side is happy with the shift, but it works more often than it doesn't.

>>729091105
Part of the reason Retro recieved the project to begin with was that Nintendo was genuinely floored with the work Retro did on Prime Remastered and wanted a new title with the same visual fidelity. That necessitated using their old engine that they understood the best.
>>
>>729083973
Were any concepts from Bamco Singapore’s build of Prime 4 utilized by Retro?
>>
>>729090937

And im telling you that if the engine is the problem in order to make the game they want, then nintendo would have used a different engine. Its been years, and MP4 started development long after BotW was finished. This doesnt add up. Its not how nintendo makes their games. Nintendo only greenlights ideas when theres a working demo of the main concept that works and is fun. If such demo cant be produced, nintendo is not interested. This is what every dev that has collaborated with nintendo agrees on. Rockstar devs specifically say that they once showed miyamoto a thick ass dossier with a game idea and the guy was like fuck ima read all that, give me a demo.
>>
>>729083973
You know they track this shit and you're only gonna fuck your friend for this
>>
>>729091458
The "working demo" for MP4 was MP Remastered.
>>
I hope we get Prime 2 remastered next instead of Prime 5. I want to see how the limited raytracing works in Dark World first. Also Prime 2 Remastered would be a good opportunity to upgrade the engine for Switch 2. Or at least use the current engine while building the new engine for Prime 5.
>>
>>729091661
Prime 2 on its own won't sell enough to justify it (sadly)

He might be a partialist. So yeah.

if Tanabe really is retiring and fucking off, the next one might actually be good. See you in another ten years.
>>

>Tanabe retires
>somehow ruins his retirement
>>
>>729083973
While I applaud the team for getting a mechanically sound game up and running and out the door, what the hell happened creatively? The design philosophy of the game feels so basic and low-effort and it all comes off as kind of dull. I only got the second master teleporter key and I just don't give a fuck to continue
>>
>>729092343
you mean another 18 years

Tanabe is obviously Yakuza.
>>

How long ago did the soundtrack by Yamamoto and Hamano get finished? Is there any info if they used real vocal recordings instead of synth?
>>
>>729092187
Prime 3 Samus looks good. Prime 1 is ugly but understandable, 2 is ugly but you see that they are trying, 3 is them figuring out how to do the Samus everyone knows, Remastered is them unlearning it, and 4 is just a generic sad potato.
>>
>>729092015
Brawl did irrepairable damage to Samus' design
>>
I know people who DIED at that shit!
>>
>>729092010
It won't now that Prime 4 bombed critically. I still want it.
>>
>>729092010
Idea: Rehaul the multiplayer and make it some sort of hybrid of Halo 1 and Hunters multiplayer

Playable characters: Samus, Dark Samus, Sylux, Federation Trooper, Demolition Trooper, Zebesians, Pirate Trooper, Trooper Pirate Mk.II.
>>
>>729092015
I think her face in Prime 4 is a great interpretation of what her face in Other M would look like with realistic facial features
>>
>>729092010
They should do it anyway to remind people what an actual good Metroid game looks like.

>/v/ doesn’t like Samus’s face in Beyond
>the literal only good part of the game
>vastly better than her retarded generic anime blonde portrayals from the first three
Maybe the key to a good Metroid game is to make her ugly as fuck, actually. She’s a butterface in the first two Primes and they’re pure kino. Dread is good because it never shows her face at all.

MS is probably in deep shit thanks to releasing an EGS-exclusive game like a bunch of retards and selling no-joke like 80 copies, imho.

>>729083973
Probably just roleplaying, but:
1. Do you know the final budget that the game cost in the end?
2. Do you know the sales figures?
3. How's the morale at Retro?

then they would never release BOTW

What gameplay, story, or character elements were kept from the original Namco attempt at the game? Was there any worry within the studio about the excessive presence of NPCs and increased level of guidance?

Your LARP was fun while it lasted OP but this is a ‘Metroid thread’ now.

Dread shows her face through the visor pretty well.
For some reason Prime 1 Remastered and Prime 4 made her visor a lot more opaque.
>>
>>729092015
I much prefer this to Prime 2 and 3 Samus.
Brawl and Hunters are still the best though.
>>
>>729093150
Prime 1 remastered looks better than prime 4 and you cannot change my mind.
>>
>>729092778
Agreed. 'Zero Suit' Samus is an abomination and always the worst option, design-wise.
>>
>>729093260
BotW's working demo was pretty much a Zelda 1 mod with a slightly different progression. Aonuma talked about it.

I don’t mind the lack of beam lighting. The one thing I feel the remaster massively fucked up was the lighting in the observatory room. It has a big skylight, a game from 2002 nails the ambient natural lightning perfectly and the remaster just makes it another pitch black room after the power goes out.

Most Prime games are semi-linear
>>
>>729093203
If a Metroid game has a map station, then it’s linear.

Prime 4 ignoring Zero Slop was the best decision they made for the game
