It's babby's first video game. The only reason people regard 7 fondly is because they all got PS1 as their first console, and of course ff7 was both pushed quite a bit, and was in frickin heckin 3D which, despite looking like absolute shit, was a major selling point and blew the minds of the 6 year olds who played it.All in all, the materia system is kinda garbage and defeats the purpose of having dedicated classes or even jobs (the latter being a far more interesting mechanic). Finding your way around the overworld is kind of a chore but not too offensive. FUCK catching a chocobo though, and how the hell you're supposed to know that the key to the temple of the ancients is just randomly in the golden saucer I'm still not sure (I think I just randomly went everywhere the first time I played). They also, for some reason, added annoying minigames to exploration, like falling down the tracks just before barret's hometown. Yuffie stealing your materia outside of wutai was pure cancer, and I hope corneo raped her for it.As for the presentation/story, it was rather interesting. Midgar was a cool setting and the series going full industrial after the more steampunk magitech of 6 was fun. On the whole though, cloud's memory problems, and sephiroth wanting to end the world and become god because he's... le evil were mostly boring. Killing aerith was a bold decision but personally I was more emotionally affected by Galuf dying in 5, and I'm not even joking. At least aerith was permanently gone, which was something they copped out of in 5.All in all it's nostalgia faggotry. It's a fine game but it gets btfo by both games that came before it, and also after it.
