Why does this character equipment screen still feel so futuristic 16 years after the fact?
It did the futuristic minimalist style the best before it became the norm in the industry but much worse and soulless.

I think its biggest crime is that not enough stuff is explained in game. FFX benefited from Tidus being a surrogate for the player, because everyone took the time to spell things out for him, and therefore the player. XIII could have worked this stuff into the narrative somehow.
