And this was all coming off of the previous Playstation which was a shockingly successful debut for Sony in the gaming space.The Xbox had three major problems going against it: 1) it was a new player in the market, 2) Microsoft not an attractive brand to consumers (even back then most people saw it as a necessary evil rather than a company that makes "fun" or "cool" stuff), and 3) they couldn't beat Sony on price so they had to beat them on power instead.

I never knew a soul who played online on console before then and couldn't tell you a popular PS2 game that used online (maybe THPS?). Most people didn't really have the infrastructure, a lot were still on dial up internet back then.
