>>729119771Yes, that's right, fiddling with the damage numbers to make things harder/easier isn't ambitious, it's the go-to method for difficulty modes in the industry. For this question to make sense, it should be rephrased as something like: "Which game made the AAA industry worse?" or "Which game made RPGs worse?", etc. Because the gaming universe is simply too vast for it to be truly affected by a single game. How would a mountain bike simulator or a incest hentai VN be affected by a AAA game or something like that?

>>729121863>world of warcraftThis. WoW killed the MMO genre. Even now games still try to follow the "WoW killer" philosophy and refuse to learn from WoW. The funny thing being the only thing that has succeeded in killing WoW is itself.
Minecraft, hands down. The deluge of early access, procedurally generated open world survival craft slop plaguing the industry started with it. It's not even constrained to indies anymore and hasn't been for a decade, almost every game has some part of Minecraft jammed into it.
>>729121863This anon has it. WoW. No other game has ever caused so many other games to either fail, caused such greater stagnation within its genre, nor been so widely mismanaged over time that it has killed itself off. The "holy trinity" is still a fucking thing when other games have tried with varying success and failure that only a handful of the near triple-digits of MMO's released in its wake have broken that mould and been moderately successful (ones that come to mind are Guild Wars 2 and Destiny but I'm sure I'm missing more).Meanwhile, of the games that still follow the holy trinity that has achieved anything more than "moderate success" has been FF11 and FF14, and MAYBE Tera. WoW is one of the biggest disasters to ever happen to MMO's and that's saying quite a lot since there were so many before it that did very well (Ragnarok Online, Ultima, Runescape, etc)
>>729122808The holy trinity isn't the problem and the perception that it is is in itself a gigantic problem. Because of it games often attempt to subvert it with disastrous results, like GW2. It's a perfect example of why WoW has killed the genre. People look at WoW, and instead of saying "okay so here's what makes WoW so good let's recreate that but better" they say "this is what WoW doesn't do so good let's do it different and totally kill WoW." The result is instead of a game that captures WoW but expands upon it, you get a game that has none of the soul of WoW with awkward mechanics that they tried to tout. Using GW2 as an example, they try to get rid of the trinity and instead boil everything down to a DPS race, they try to make the combat "action packed" and instead have a clunky combat with fuck all abilities. The trinity works because it inherently makes the most sense. You can't get rid of it because it is solved. What you should instead be doing is trying to expand upon it. Expand upon the roles, expand upon the mechanics, etc. That's what it always comes back to. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel.
>>729123618I'd make the exact opposite argument. It's the fact that the "problem has been solved" mentality that no devs will want to try and do something new. Say what you will about GW2, but at least they tried and made it work regardless. It's still a financially stable and enjoyable (at least from my perspective) game for me to sink an hour or two into. But again, this whole idea that "Stop trying to reinvent the wheel" idea is bullshit in and of itself. If we're going to use the same analogy, use propellers and fly into the sky, or to sink beneath the waves. Use a rocket engine, or a fucking hot air balloon. But no. We get the equivalent of a Reliant Robin that flips itself over because its a one-trick pony? For the rest of our gaming careers? Get that shit out of here.

>>729118094TRVKE
>>729124069NTA, but you are shouting at the sky. The trinity is a thing because it covers defence, offence and recovery. The only way to expand upon it is to revert back to the EQ route and breakdown the roles even further. For example, remove the tanks ability to pull and have a dedicated puller class. Or make healers focus solely on healing and have a class that focuses almost entirely on buffing the party. Also, I wouldn't call GW2's "everybody is a DPS" approach new or different, that's just lazy.

>>729117646I'm gonna have to go with League of Legends, Steve.
Resident Evil 4.
>>729117646HaloCall of Duty 4PUBG
>>729124069GW2 took the wheel and made it hexagonal. They do it in all of their design. Everything they touted before release epitomizes it. Heart quests, combat, no holy trinity. It is all classic wheel reinvention and the result is a much worse product. WoW is like a carriage wheel. Nobody tries to refine it, nobody adds tires. That's why GW2 is shit and endures only with trannies who want to play dress up with dollies. >>729124610Correct, but you can also just expand upon the roles instead. Just because the trinity makes the most sense doesn't mean that the mechanics of each role are perfected; make having two tanks necessary and make managing threat in counters more complex, give DPS playstyles that actually impact how they approach combat and give them more counterplay to respond to, make healers more support/CC orientated instead of just anti-DPS. It's crazy to me how WoW absolutely set the standard for class fantasy and not a single MMO since has learned from that. We still have people who talk about making combat flashier and giving the character 10 abilities and a DPS only role as a positive thing.
>>729124875fucking this
>>729117646Ocarina of Time, Steve!
>>729123618>The trinity works because it inherently makes the most senseI also think it's been built into RPGs from the start, especially MMOs. Those are just the basic roles you have to fulfill when trying to get a monster's HP to 0 before yours, in a game with multiple characters in a party it only makes sense to tune each character towards being good at a specific job. Putting people into specialized roles isn't a detriment to teamwork, it's just how teamwork happens.
>>729117646Battlefield V
>>729118236Can’t really blame Fortnite for the lack of originality from other companies. That being said, Fortnite does suck. It’s the definition of sensory overload in videogame form
>>729125186I agree, they should expand upon the roles more. I for one would like to see classes that excel versus specific mobs, like a Priest being all but mandatory if you're fighting Undead. With the Priest's healing abilities having the ability to damage Undead. Or certain classes are better than others at dealing with armoured/unarmoured enemies, wild animals, etc. The real problem honestly, are the players. You just know there will be endless bitching if a class outright sucks in particular dungeons or against certain enemies. Like a rogues backstab/poisons being useless on an undead, or a Paladin's holy smite doing jack shit against a pack of wolves.
Not the worst, but Slender deserves a spot.It started the 'asset flip indie horror' genre.

>>729117646WoW
>>729125370That's what I'm saying. >>729125719I think that's a bad idea because it is an MMO and not something like a table top RPG, making classes less viable for it would just exclude those classes for most people. But I think what you're saying is sort of what I was getting at with giving DPS more combat mechanics and healers being more support. Rather than making certain matchups optimal, classes should be given contextual roles in combat. Like for example say there is a powerful caster enemy, a rogue can creep into their backline and blow it up and a priest can hit them with a big damage buff before they do so and that will remove a big threat from the fight.
Whatever was the most influential in terms of creating the gachashit hellscape we now live in, and anybody claiming otherwise is either a gachafag or a retard (redundant, I know).

>>729117646Most of these answers are from the 2010s and, therefore, inherently incorrect. You want the real culprits? Look to the to shift of the money and the media come the late 2000s.>Call of Duty: MW>Portal>Halo 3>World of Warcraft post-BC launch>Guitar Hero 2>Xbox 3602006-2007 was the pinnacle, and the start of the descent. This amalgamation of casual trash became the siren song that finally got *real* investor money involved. The kind that demands return on their investment, and bases decisions on spreadsheets rather than feelings. Naturally, all visionaries and passionate developers either caved or got ousted by the majority at the sight of that many zeros on a paycheck, and the rest is history. Gaming fully shed it's identity as a niche hobby.
Breath of the Wild has killed all nintendo games so that.
>>729117646breath of the wild
>>729126179I think it can work with good encounter design. For instance, a rogue's backstab poison maybe useless against undead, but say you're fighting a lich and rogue can just sneak by and easily destroy the lich's phylactery. Or a Paladin's warhammer being great for armoured enemies. As long as the game isn't designed around linear, level based zones, I think it could work.>Like for example say there is a powerful caster enemy, a rogue can creep into their backline and blow it up and a priest can hit them with a big damage buff before they do so and that will remove a big threat from the fight. You can already do that in the majority of MMOs with a rogue, the problem is that very few have encounters were that would even be worthwhile.

>>729126749I'm saying to make it necessary. Make it so the enemy has a frontline that the tank can't just rush passed to get to the casters. Same with healing. Give healers long cooldowns on their healing abilities but give them impactful buffs, counterspells, CC, things that make combat dynamic. Same with tank. More reactionary abilities, more focus on mitigation, more aggro mechanics.

>>729127278I agree, though there should be multiple options. Like a mage that specialises in earth could summon a large rock that a ranger can climb to get LoS on the backline caster. Alas, the past two decades of MMOs have engendered the player base to play like brainless retards. They either group and aoe everything down, or play DDR on raid night. You just know that the moment an MMO makes them use their brains during an encounter they'll throw out the classic "this games doesn't respect my time" complaint.
>>729117646Most RPGs after FF7 learned the wrong lessons from FF7.
>>729127867Yeah I'm not saying that rogue should be the exclusive solution, what I'm saying is that each class should have ways in which it approaches aspects of an encounter that it must engage with to be optimal rather than just doing skill rotations.
