Because MvC2 was lightning in a bottle, anon. It was a freak accident of jank, style, and tight mechanics that somehow came together into a beautiful mess of hypers, infinites, broken-ass assists and a GOD TIER soundtrack. They didn’t even know what they were making-half the cast was shoved in last minute, the balance is non-existent, and it still ended up being the most hype fighting game ever made.

Nowadays devs are terrified of "unfair" mechanics and focus testing everything to death. Capcom would never allow something like unfly or guard breaks to sneak through again. They want clean and polished, not raw and chaotic. That rawness is what made MvC2 feel alive.

It's because nobody gave a fuck about dog shit like cover art back then. Think about how many games that had crazy amazing cover art and the game was pure fucking dog shit slop. The worst game I've ever played in my life, Rascal, has cover art that makes the game look like it's going to be fucking great and it ends up being pure horse shit. You could make your cover art whatever as long as the actual game was good nobody gave a shit.

The cover art was the most important thing in terms of selling games back then. Most kids didn't know shit about the games they were getting their parents to buy, at most they maybe saw a commercial or read about it in a magazine. The purpose of cover art back then was to be eye catching.

Which is ironic since most people buy digital and won't even see the cover of the game besides the 2 secs of them clicking to start the app up.

I disagree. While MvC2 itself cannot be replicated wholesale, there is a general design ethos that *can* be followed. What makes MvC2 unique isn't its kusoge, its the fact that its an extremely fast, frenetic game that also forces a high number of player interactions. You have to win MvC2's whack neutral a lot in matches in order to win the game. This is just something that no other hyper or tag fighter has ever replicated, even MvC3.
If anything, with the advent of active tag its only gotten worse. Tag games have never been less interactive than they are now.
