Unpopular opinion but Dead Rising was never good. The only thing it had was big number of zombies on screen which in that generation was pushing the limits I guess.

Deeply flawed game that I loved and still do. Still a good litmus test for someone’s taste imo.

Not a big fan of Crowbcat but his DR video is probably his best work. Outsourcing to a bunch of hipster xillenials who had no respect for both the game itself and a fundamental misunderstanding of the source materials it was born from was always going to fail. I’d rather we just had that first game as a one-off and a lifetime of what ifs instead of everything that followed, even if that means losing DR2.

I tried playing Dead Rising 2 because of /v/ and its one of the worst games I've ever played. Your character feels like absolute SHIT, and all I did was craft the same bat and nail over and over while walking back and forth from safehouse to whatever npc or quest I needed to go fetch. And then I just happen to walk into a boss room whos pretending its dark souls and not the clunkiest shit on earth, no warning at all 3 hours of progress lost because saves are fucking manual like its a metroidvania or something. I'm still in bewilderment at what is supposed to be appealing about any game in this series if thats what it plays like.
>>
>>729127864
It was a good game. /v/ bitches because crying about their childhood games from twenty years ago is considered cute and funny around here.

>>729129398
Nta, but the survivor AI is one of the worst implemented mechanics in gaming history. Also, the mini-chainsaw + books is beyond broken.
>>
>>729128540
I did say still so I did mean ever, I don't at least think I've seen a game have so many high quality enemy models running at full animations without a bunch of lod trickery since dead rising 1, pretty sure even 2 toned down the amount of zombies in favor of ragdoll physics and prettier graphics, 3 and 4 simplified the zombie models and textures and probably did a bunch of lod and culling trickery.
You see a lot of games trying to do these scenarios with a lot of units on screen at the same time, but they always tend to resort to replacing the actual further away models with paper cutouts or dropping their animations to something like 5fps, making the whole thing seem really jarring.
>>
>>729129516

Level of detail trickery, the type of stuff I was using as an example in my prior post like turning further away npcs into more or less paper cutouts or limiting their animations to lower fps to save on performance.
Obviously LOD isn't that noticeable most of the time since it can just mean lowering the polygon amount and texture quality of a further away model slightly, but in cases where there are a lot of npcs you usually have to resort to some more extreme ways.
>>
>>729129891
changing around the level of detail on the meshes and textures to simplify stuff the player can't see very well, usually based on distance from the player.

So you would have 2 or 3 different sets of textured models for everything, getting progressively shittier and thus less resource-intensive to load and animate.
And just set the rendering up to swap between them.

The most extreme bleeding edge version of this is what the new Steam VR head set is doing, foveated streaming.
It watches your eyes and only renders shit that you are directly looking at properly, swapping shit around when it sees your eyes twitch.

Survivor AI is absolutely diabolical for the most part
Some of the boss battles are garbage
Firearm mechanics are a hindrance
The convicts respawning was unforgivable and made so little sense I’m fairly sure it was a bug that never got fixed

But still, sovl to the core, never to be replicated

>>
>>729132204
I concede on every point except one and a half, hand-holding AI makes zombies a lot dumber for some reason. And convicts are a joke after you know where basic firearms are, after they crash once, you basically death rush them one by one.
>Yeah but why?
IIRC it is a bug, but I like it, your reward is faster and safer traversal for that bit, only con is you still have a good 2 screens away from actually rescuing Survivors after the initial walk.

But still, Adam's Chainsaws are a godsend, and Quickstep does affect hand holding Survivors.

I think what makes it a 10 for me is that it's fun, it looks great, it feels completely unique, it has layers to it, it has replayability, and it aged well. The persistent clock and killable survivors was a bold addition imo and it's part of why it still feels so unique.

there's a certain soul to it. this dreamcast era y2k optimism aesthetic. except obviously refined because it came out later. But to me it has roots there. Like Shenmue...arcade realism...i'm not sure what to call it. One of my favorite aesthetics and I wish more games looked like that.

they don't make em like this anymore. Dead rising 2 is cool and all but its missing the charm of 1.

Wrong. Dead Rising 1 was the best game that Capcom put out at the time. You could even say it was their final good game. Then came the MonHun yearly slop, the outsourcing to Canada and Australia, the extreme push to cater to the west, an entire generation of nothing by rom compilations and remakes.

I think the controls for Frank were both intentionally clunky (he's mostly just a reporter, despite the wars he's seen), but the RPG mechanics allows him to sort of wrestle his way up to a moveset that's more akin to a videogame.
So you start off fresh, feeling like a normal fag needing to improvise (which is good to make you explore and make use of the mall), and later on you won't really need the mall at all (you can beat the game with spitting if you want).

It's one thing to say a game is 'clunky', but the context of the character, what they'll be doing and how that would LATER translate to gameplay, should be considered when discussing games in retrospect. A fully leveled Frank and a fresh Frank are both pretty intuitive to control, one just has more earned tools.
>>
>>729133491
As a Crazy Taxi enjoyer I am inclined to agree with you. Art direction for Dead Rising is solid and holds up today as just the right amount of stylized that arguably looks better than the new remake. Frank definitely does.
>>
>>729133063

>>
>>729132676
Your image is FAAANTASTIC
>>
>>729135918
That would have been good to know, I dont know why I thought that. I would make the argument that I found absolutely 0 fun wandering around hunting for stuff when the zombies barely do anything, but I bet if I knew I could actually make use of any of the stuff around the mall I actually might have. Still never opening this game ever again though.
>>
>>729128241
The zombie shit is SECONDARY to the fun of DR 1 and 2. The whole point is that it's an optimisation puzzle where the survivors are the bonus points and your ending is your rank.
>>
>>729136516
Except EXP and levels carry over even if you don't complete the main story, and they are integral for being an obstacle in your game of optimization.
>>
>>729136695
The zombies only matter in the sense that they are a roadblock slowing you down. The levelling carrying over is to mitigate frustration about having a "doomed" run for new players too underleveled for a section of the game. It says that their progress wasn't wasted and they can try the game again but with better skills and more knowledge. Anyways, the end goal is to do a full survivor run on New Game. NG+ is just the training wheels.
>>
>>729137001
I still think what you call a 'roadblock', being a persistent hurdle throughout the game, and what gives escorting a survivor any challenge aside from the convicts or new enemy types (which are mostly zombie variant stand ins), is disingenuous.
>>
>>729137110
Fair enough. Though I would say that the challenge there isn't the zombies in of themselves. Rather the challenge is more survivor babysitting and time management.
>>
>>729137250
Without them though, it would literally just be tard wrangling, the game. Set in a mall, only missing bright colored, matching vests and helmets. It's not JUST knowing lay-out, and the bathroom short-cuts, or even just weapon placement. The zombies are the problem you have to constantly navigate around, I'd argue the biggest power spike on a fresh save is the kick. Aside from punching, it's the best way to instantly knock down a zombie, but you have to be in the air for it.

You don't need to 'babysit' for anyone aside from the odd scripted moments where you have to come back to calm a retard down. Getting your retard (and 2+ others) around zombies, is more than just hugging a wall and optimizing.
Yeah, you can learn to enter areas and feel for a Survivor's 'sweet spot' so they can load in without being up your ass to save time. But at the end of the day, you're still having to clear the way, the zombie killing is at least half of your optimization.
>>
>>729137435
Fair point. I guess I was undervaluing the challenge zombies bring when it comes to the games.
>>
>>729137608
I mean, if the game was just convicts, military guys and the cultists, I guess the 'mobbage' would be more in your face. But there is a lv.1 factor, where you should pickup some furniture, learn where weapons are, and learn what foods to combine. The game has saving, and the only real pain in the ass is getting every Otis call, or the 48 hour mode. Even if the game was intended for a sitting with knowledge attained previously, the game benefits from free roaming inbetween major beats and finding survivors.

Plus, aside from just spamming pictures, gimmick/mass kills are an EXP farm. I don't know the speedrunning side of Dead Rising, but I'd imagine a lot of people would want to use the lawnmowers, or boss weapons just to get some points in. (I do recognize the easter eggs and gimmick shots that give mass points too, but that is another integral mechanic to the game).
