what's the point of a battleship anyways, one rogue missile and 10% of your military budget goes up in flames
>>
>>729135778
Before militaries figured out how useful carriers were, battleships were the biggest guns for taking out ships at a range they couldn't retaliate. Also for shelling land targets to support ground troops. As technology evolved they lost their purpose to carriers or missile cruisers

That's what every military planner since the 1960s has believed. The rate of expenditure will far exceed the rate of replacement. You're not turning toaster factories into tank factories like its WW2 in the age of modern tech.
Everyone will shoot their wad and after 6-8 weeks whatever the current situation is after that will hold until a peace agreement is signed OR the world ends in nuclear hellfire.

I agree on both points, but warfare tends to evolve through trial and error and given how battleships were kings of naval warfare pre-carrier, militaries were hesitant to go all in on carriers. Also when I saw Trump announcing the "battleship" it triggered my autism he kept calling it that

at this point if you are going to build something so massive just stuff it with full size ICBMs since they could (probably) fit in there, all the power of a full size silo but you can move it, complementing the shorter ranged submarine missile fleet

lasers, railgun, and all other stuff would be useful to defend itself

then just park your unsinkable mobile icbm silo fields close to any offending country to make them seethe

Unless we're talking about a China vs India/Russia situation, a Pacific war is an air war first, naval war second and grind out ground battle dead last.

>Chinese shipbuilding industry!

The issue being that the entire Chinese coastline is in range of the US/Japan, and that much of what they need to fuel that industry is imported through the trade routes to the south, where naval chokepoints are extremely common.

If you want to point to WW2 for clues, that's where the majority of US submarine operations took place to choke off Japan's oil and rubber imports. And as of right now, those areas are either controlled by US allies or the US itself.

Think the Houthis shutting down the Red Sea, except done by a real military.

The nearest point of Taiwan to the mainland is 80 miles, you can't just give retarded peasants a rifle and tell them to swim there.

The answer is nothing because you can’t convert production lines for digital age technology like you could for industrial age technology. China’s manufacturing advantage is significant p, but only for pre-war build up.
In a hot war the USN (+ friends) and PLAN will maul each other and whomever is left standing after that cataclysmic clash wins by default.

lmao. Large surface ships are countered by conventional cruise missiles but it’s not like there aren’t countermeasures for cruise missiles. Drones are too small, slow, and vulnerable to be effective against any dense air defense network. Ukraine and Iran have both demonstrated that repeatedly.
>>
>>729139652
oinkraine drones are hand-made, dji pumps them out daily. russia still uses the buhanka due to a lack of supply vehicles, toyota makes millions every year. do you really think AMD, TSMC, samsung, apple etc. can't make something as primitive as electronics for a tomahawk missile? the m1 ahbrams is decades old at this point. what about airbus, volkswagen, nippon steel, etc.? the reason these military meme junk are so expensive is because they're not mass produced. the GDP of fucking italy mogs russia
only issue i see is lack of manpower, and that can be solved by sending immigrants to the frontline by force

>>
what the chances Trump forgets about this within a few weeks and the navy pretending they are totally building it while doing nothing about shipyards just pocketing the money until the program is cancelled
>>
>>729140035
There's something to be said about the entirety of the Chinese coastline (and its shipyards) being in range of ground based offensive systems in Asia, and that the war goals of any potential Pacific conflict revolve around the PLAN blockading and invading an island that's even closer to US assets.

You can't sink the Phillipines, Korea or Japan, and the PLA certainly doesn't have the capability to establish air superiority over them.

People keep trying to frame a PLAN vs USN conflict like it's WW2 IJN vs USN, where American shipyards were always entirely out of range of the enemy and the final war goal was a potential invasion of Japan.

The inverse of that is not the case with China. Their shipbuilding capabilities are well known and located. You can't pull a USSR and move your military shipbuilding facilities over the Urals and then transport frigates to the front via rail.

All the US has to do (and generally, is aiming to do) is to make a blockade and invasion of Taiwan impossible. That means turning the Taiwan Strait into a drone infested minefield, and keeping air superiority over the sea.

There's a genuine question to be asked of what the point of building more ships for a war that's 80 miles from your coast, when you could just build more planes and missiles.

The answer is basically just for logistics to support an invasion, but ships aren't going to make the invasion of Taiwan possible. At least, not alone.

>>729140441
That "base" is the entire northern part of the Philipines and the southern part of Japan. The PLAN cannot blockade those *and* Taiwan, let alone establish air superiority out that far.

play Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age

Essentially, naval combat is almost entirely dependent on how good your tech is and how much missiles you have.

Surface combat can be boiled down to
>who can spot the enemy first
>who has more and better missiles to launch and how far away you can launch them (by ship or plane)
>who has more and better counter-missile missiles to launch

It gets more complex when submarines are involved
>how hard is it to detect your subs
>how high iq is your sub captain
>pretty much nothing else

Nah Tsushima saw how effective they were when used decisively. It's also helped convince so many navies to go all in on Battleships, since only the ships main batteries did anything.
Jutland actually reinforced this, since the Battlecruisers suffered immensely compared to the proper Battleships.
So in the interwar period you get a bunch of navies doubling down on the Battleship concept.
