What made it so iconic?
>>729133571It had its own game on the Sega genesis
>>729133571Would.
>>729133639It did?
>>729133680
>>729133571Superior Clan engineering
>>729133571Emphasized stompy and shooty from top to bottom
Was Tex right in saying the Mad Cat being the most powerful Mech was irrelevant because it was only suit for inter-Clan conflicts and unsuited towards Inner Sphere warfare where a billion men could bury it?
>>729135181You could say that about pretty much any omnimech, anon. Once people realized how deep the clanner 'tism ran, they learned how to keep those vatborn fucks on the periphery where they belonged.
>>729133571It's on the cover of all the media.
>>729135181I don't think so. Being a reasonably fast, well armed and armored mech that can be tailored to suit particular missions makes it well suited to small strike operations against particular targets, raiding enemy backlines, that sort of thing. Using it as a line combatant in a total war situation is a waste, really. It's too expensive for that, and the clans could never hope to field enough of them to match the tide of cheaper IS battlemechs in a prolonged slog. To sum up, I would call it a situationally powerful asset if deployed carefully.
>>729135181Tex is a retarded ape yet again.anti-mech mechs are supposed to be supported with other mechs with other roles but every video game fan wants only mechs for fighting mechs, and this works for the videogames because mech v mech is all that ever matters there. And even with that it has 2 machineguns for a reason and can kill its own weight in infantry. It's more that it's a waste of time for it to be fighting them. It's literally too good to waste on infantry.
>>729133571Cool name, cool look, cool game feel. That's all you need.
>>729135541Wasn't his point that quality can't beat numbers when your supply lines are extremely, psychotically overextended? I think that was the video he brought up the differences between the production numbers of the Tiger and the Sherman/T-34
>>729133571MechWarrior 2 box art and intro cinematicMechWarrior 3 box artMechCommander intro cinematicThe games were promoting it as much as they could
>>729135731yes that's the one, the Allies produced like tens of thousands of tanks to the German's producing barely 1000 is the example he used
big robot on the box was all i needed to buy mw2. being a great mech overall helps too
what is the best Battletech / Battletech-adjacent game to play? I mostly play Jap mecha.
>>729135731Clans are just fucking retarded and poorly written. There's no point in comparing them to real history. They wrote an overwhelming outside power and decided to make them honorbound crazies as a weakness and both parts came off as stupid and forced. Never mind that any supply line troubles that made rearming and repairing mechs a pain would be so much worse trying to transport a legion of infantry through space. What would you rather have to deal with, a few dudes, their mechs, and their support crew, or ten thousand infantry?
>>7291359983 is the best mw game, followed by 2. depending on preference you might like 5. but 5 is more arcadey like 4 is. its newer though so there is a lot of stuff for it, and mods.the battletech game thats like the tabletop is pretty fun with mods too but thats a lot different than piloting them
>>729135998None of the games are particularly good and none of them actually depict the 'Mechs the way the tabletop lore does.
>>729135998Heavy Gear 2
>>729136052I dunno. I like how stupid the clans are. I think the idea a singular group that had a schism but absolutely no outside pressures at all (probably a first for a proper society in human history) could probably foster an extremely retarded and ill-advised worldview when actually put up against people and ideologies that had to fight to existClanners didn't understand what actual total war was like because they'd only ever played wargames for a hundred+ years
Which of these niggas would actually be best to live in?
>>729135998MechCommander is the most tightly designed Battletech videogame and is one of the best singleplayer RTT games. The missions are varied and well-designed and offer a good challenge. Resource management is extremely important. Gaining clan tech salvage is very rewarding and the game's systems and high level of challenge constantly makes you manage your losses. There are no glaring AI or balance issues. However, the mech customization is very shallow.MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries has the most content among the classic games and is reasonably balanced (the original release, not the mektek version). The AI can be pretty janky, but it's still better than the other MechWarrior games. The game feel and aesthetics are somewhat floaty and cartoony, a significant downgrade from MW2 and MW3, but gameplay-wise it's way better designed than either of those games. Mech customization is more restrictive than earlier MechWarrior games, but it makes the different mech chassis more distinct from one another.
>>729136858Steiner. Be rich, walk around town in your Atlas scout lance.
>>729136650The very first time they ever tried to batchall an outsider he didn't even show up and just left a boobytrapped spacecraft to frag them all, and then they kept doing it anyway. There's no reason why they keep playing by rules against people that don't even understand what they are but will happily betray them over and over. There's culture shock, "are these people without honor?" is fine, but they have to stop doing it or it becomes a joke. It's fucked up because later writing added that they'd already had internal conflicts where they understood even amongst their own people that the rules would be broken or abused. They already knew sometimes people would cheat you.
>>729137126I actually have Mechcommander but the FMVs don't work
>>729137397To be fair, the Clans are a big fucking joke. They made their way almost all the way to Earth, then ComStar offered to settle the matter with a few quick proxy battles. All of them thought they'd be taking the galaxy's biggest victory lap, except for Wolf, who actually took the challenge seriously - yet when Wolf and Wolf alone actually won, all the other Clans blamed them for their embarrassing losses.
>>729138102Isn't clan wolf the battletech equivalent of the Matt Ward's era Ultramarines
>>729137489I haven't encountered that issue, but it's possible that the game you have installed does not have the DATA\MOVIES folder or is missing files from that folder such as OPENING.SMK. If the files are complete but the movies still do not play, maybe it's a graphics rendering issue in modern OSs and GPUs and using a DirectDraw wrapper like dgVoodoo2 might fix it.
>>729133571I don't quite know how, but it just has that kind of aura to it I guess? But I do know this. When little kid me first got Mech Assault and knowing less than nothing about Battletech, unlocked the Mad Cat in story mode, it was love at first sight. It clearly is doing something right if it could get a complete ignoramus like a little child to go 'oh that's fucking rad'.
